What causes csf leak?

If you’re experiencing a runny nose and wondering why the heck it won’t stop, you may have a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. Yes, folks, there’s such a thing as leaking brain juice! Don’t worry; it’s not that gross or harmful – well, at least most of the time.

A CSF leak happens when cerebrospinal fluid drips out of your brain or spinal cord and into your nose or ears (eww). But what causes this bizarre bodily phenomenon? Keep reading to find out!

The Anatomy Lesson

Before we dive into the main subject matter, let’s take an anatomy refresher course.

Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear liquid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord (duh). This liquid bathes these vital organs with nutrients and oxygen while also removing waste products from them.

The production of CSF takes place in four ventricles located deep within the brain called ‘lateral’, ‘third’, ‘fourth’ and (you guessed it!) ‘‘fifth’’ ventricle which connects to cerebral aqueduct leading through medulla oblongata).

Fun Fact: An adult human produces about 500 ml (about two cups) daily.

A Drip From Up Top: Cranial CSF Leaks

Now onto the good stuff – what causes those pesky leaks?! There are several reasons why cranial leaks happen:

Sinus Surgery

If you’ve gone under sinus surgery recently, congratulations – You now have one more risk factor for postoperative cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea (yay?). Your nasal cavity directly communicates with parts where csf runs so during any surgery done on sinuses accidental injury can lead to leakage.

Head Injury

Blows to the head can create skull fractures and holes that let cerebrospinal fluid ooze out. And if you remember your high school science lessons, the brain is enclosed within this bony skull cover (no, not beanies).

Spontaneous

Don’t be alarmed by spontaneous CSF leaks; they’re quite rare and occur when no apparent trauma or disease has loosened up things near the brain area.

The Other Side: Spinal CSF Leaks

The spine can also betray you with its own share of liquid exits:

Surgery

Spine surgery involves an intricate dance between doctors and anaesthesiologists so any mistake can lead to leakage from csf which causes complications in healing surgeries wound itself.

Trauma

If a person suffers a severe spinal injury such as fraacture or dislocation then it could damage chorda equina causing risk of cerebrospinal fluid escape .

Are you uncertain whether you have a fluid leak? Well, buckle up because we’re about to go over some symptoms (sorry!). Symptoms for cranial and spinal leaks are quite different!

Cranial Leak Indications

  • Headache, usually worse when standing upright.
  • Clear watery drainage from one or both nostrils
  • Drainage down the back of throat tastes salty (remember – csf is salty!).

Signs Of A Spinal Fluid Leak

  • Pain at site of injection after anesthesia procedure which lasts longer than intended.
  • headaches upon sitting/standing which reduce on laying flat
  • Neck stiffness & pain

In either scenario seek doctor’s help cz these issues do not subside on their own.

So how do we treat leaking brains? It’s time for treament modes rundown;

Non Interventional Approach

If flow rate is minimal/negligible sometimes non intervention approach is followed only through monitoring as usually the body heals itself over time.

Interventional Approach

If symptoms persist or leak intensity increases, it requires surgery. Below are some surgical procedures for both cranial and spinal leaks:

Cranial Leak Surgery

  • Endoscopic Endonasal Procedure! Gives you a rare chance to have instruments inserted into your nose to access brain.’

Spinal Leak Treatment

-surgery called ‘Epidural Blood Patching’ AKA Vampire Cure require injecting blood around site of leakage.

Get rest as much needed during recovery mode.

High risk factors like sinus surgery head injuries can be avoided in first place. So take these steps to prevent csf leaks:

  • Wear helmets while riding motorbikes or bicycles.
  • Stay away from extreme activities that may lead to head trauma.
  • Don’t insert anything up your nose – You savvy this lesson folks!

Caution: Insertion of needles outside medical settings is also one way which leads towards spinal fluid problems so keep those tattoos/piercing hygienicate! With all said and done, we believe nobody wants CSF running out of their face (unless you’re The Flash) Keep yourself safe; wear protective gear when embarking on high-risk activities because ain’t no shame in protecting one’s noggin!
