What can you do for a broken finger?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve had a bit of an accident and managed to break one (or more) of your fingers. We all know just how annoying it is to have something as small as our finger cause us so much discomfort. But fear not, my fellow sufferers! There are plenty of things you can do to ease the pain while waiting for it to heal.

Seek Medical Attention

Let’s get the important stuff out of the way first – if your finger looks like its pointing in a direction that nature didn’t intend or has turned a lovely shade of black and purple (which some people might find amusing), seek medical attention immediately. It’s better to be safe than sorry ESPECIALLY when we’re talking about fingers here.

Diagnosing Your Injured Digit

Before starting any home remedies, take a moment to assess just how bad you’ve actually hurt yourself.

  • Can you still move your finger(s)?
  • How painful is it on a scale from 1-10?
  • Is there swelling?
  • Are your joints locking up?

Pro Tip: It will only hurt more by trying to bend or move them around too often so leave them be until someone readjusts them for you.

This information could be useful especially if informing doctors about the damage sustained which shouldn’t prolong recovery time unnecessarily.

Use Ice Packs Regularly

Ice packs work wonders when trying combat swelling because they help reduce inflammation while numbing away any persistent pain from broken bones below the skin.

Wrap some ice packs up with thick towels before applying them onto afflicted areas; never apply ice directly since doing so may cause frostbite!

Leave each application on problematic tissues no longer than 15 minutes at least five times throughout day during those difficult days after said incident.

Warning: Never sleep with an ice pack on… unless icy fingers are part of your vibe?

Immobilize the Finger

Isolate the finger from other ones using a splint or another immobilization device like custom-fitted casts. That’s right people that finger must stand alone until it heals.

Have someone assist you and prevent further damage especially if multiple fingers are damaged.

A Quick List on How to Immobilize Your Finger for Faster Healing

  • Cut off any jewelry located near said injury site unless wearing bling is worth risking loss of circulation
  • Gently straighten out the bent finger back carefully while using tape or preferred splint materials to keep joint immobile at slight angle.
  • Wrap that bad boy up nice and snug avoiding restricting too much blood flow, except in cases where we’re not talking about completing cosplay costumes at all costs cause then okay…

Oh no here comes pain (which some oddly people might find entertaining)! And if broken bones weren’t enough suffering already?! It’s advised by professionals to take over-the-counter pain medication as instructed on packaging but… I doubt a little something called ibuprofen will do much against being accidentally sat upon by an elephant.

Distraction Yourself from Discomfort

Distractions help take our minds off things so indulge in guilty pleasures because you deserve it (honestly who doesn’t???) just keep away your injured hand during reading ‘War and Peace’ only complicates this situation even more than necessary!

Below are few ways distracting oneself:

  • Binge watch favorite TV shows /movies
  • Coloring books (there’s no shame here my fellow adults)
  • Playing video games (Not recommended when dealing with frustration)
  • Experiment meal prep recipes despite possessing lacking culinary skills… be patient!

Use Heat Therapy

Heat therapy can also aid in reducing pain away whilst increasing blood flow to nurture healing tissues. Take note that there are times you SHOULDN’T use heat; like when experiencing torn ligaments.

However, here’s a tip on how-to:

  • Wrap hot water bottle with clean rag
  • Hold over affected zone roughly 15 minutes each time until muscle soreness [wears off slowly]

Elevate Your Finger to Lessen Swelling

Elevating the injured area has similar positive effects as using ice and heat, since it’ll reduce swelling too. Keep it raised while sleeping or just resting in a chair for awhile will help drainage back out towards heart rather than simply pooling around your lower extremities after sustaining unwarranted damage shown below:

Finger Elevation Diagram

We know what you’re thinking “What does my diet have anything to do with broken fingers?!” Well my fried, eating healthy foods and beverages may help in making the bones in your fingers heal much faster.

Here’s a quick list of food items to fight inflammation:

  1. Pineapples for bromelain enzyme
  2. Tuna or salmon (oily fish) rich source of omega-3 fatty acids
  3. Oranges & strawberries; which pack an excellent amount of vitamin C used by body for healing
  4. Almonds provide calcium – essential mineral needed for ALL types bone growth

HYDRATE…

Drink plenty H20 also we’re not talking about swimming across the Pacific Ocean but staying hydrated especially during this kind ‘atypical’ recovery time will aid with muscle/joint flexibility allowing greater movements post-recovery phase.

Essential minerals residing within water also helps repair damage that was caused earlier on so sometimes it’s okay to skip electrolyte-only infused drinks.(except when you’re training hardcore).

No matter how many times we’ve been warned, don’t say we didn’t… Regardless begin range-of-motion exercises once pain subsides enough where said exercises are possible.

If waiting until official recuperation process is done before resuming daily routine sounds unbearable here few finger exercises :

1) Finger flexion/extension
– Close hand into fist purposefully moving tendons inside but prevent clenching especially if wearing jewelry due to risk health issues outcome.

2) Grip strengtheners/ squeezers OR Resistance Band Exercise:
– Hand gripping devices typically have varying resistance levels good from early rehab stages while incorporating bilateral work too

A Quick List Broken Fingers Exercises

  • Wrist curls attached some weight for strengthening muscles in arm& wrist regions similar ones use commonly targeting tennis elbow injury recovery phases as well
  • Resisted Adduction & Abduction to wrist for same reasons mentioned above minus the tennis elbows

Table of Breeds

Exercise Benefits
Finger flexion/extension strengthens tendons in hands and forearm regions
Hand Grippers/Squeezers improve grip strength useful during rehabilitation phases (early rehab)

Now you’re much more equipped on getting over a broken finger injury which may not have happened had those darn kids NOT LEFT their damn skateboard lying around. While we don’t recommend hitting up a DIY repair shop or handcasting that picture-perfect cosplay outfit instead get some actual help so where every pain has its purpose will no longer make sense as healing spreads throughout damaged areas like wildfire.
