What can u take for period cramps?
Period cramps are the worst! They make you feel like your uterus is being attacked by a dozen ninjas with swords. And let’s not forget about the bloating, headaches and mood swings. But don’t worry my friend, I gotchu covered. In this article, we’ll go through some remedies that can help alleviate period cramps.
Why do Women Experience Period Cramps?
Before we dive into remedies, it’s important to understand why women experience period cramps in the first place. When a woman goes through her menstrual cycle, her uterus contracts and relaxes to help shed its lining. The contractions push blood out of the uterus and towards vagina which causes discomfort and pain.
Types of Menstrual Pain
Girls experience different types of period pain; they include;
- Primary Dysmenorrhea
- Secondary Dysmenorrhea
Primary dysmenorrhoea occurs after menstruation starts while Secondary dysmenorrhoea happens later due to an already existing condition such as endometriosis or fibroids.
Let’s Talk Remedies!
Now that we know what causes period pains let’s move on to some natural remedies that can ease these dreaded symptoms.
1) Exercise
Believe it or not, exercise can work wonders when you’re experiencing menstrual pain – physical activity releases chemicals called endorphins which relieve pain.
2) A Warm Bath or Heating Pad
Draw yourself a warm bath or grab a heating pad for at least 20 minutes. Heat helps reduce muscle tension thus relieving pain from uterine contractions – this will also come in handy if you suffer from lower back pains during periods (talk about killing two birds with one stone!).
3) Massage
Get yourself comfortable on your bed/couch/floor/space station/anywhere really cause massages are great for easing cramps. You can do it yourself, find someone to do it for you or even hire a professional masseuse (if you’re feeling extra fancy).
4) Anti-inflammatory Diet
Eat your way to pain-free periods! Foods high in anti-inflammatory agents such as: fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds reduces inflammation in the body which is often the root of menstrual pains.
Foods To Avoid During Your Menstration
Dismiss consuming or reduce intake of foods including;
- processed foods
- red meat
- caffeine
- alcohol
they only increase inflammation further leading to more cramps.
5) Over-The-Counter Medications
If natural remedies don’t quite cut it or if you have an underlying health condition causing extreme discomfort during menstruation then over-the-counter medication may be worth trying.
The two most common types I’d suggest are Ibuprofen (Tiredness aside), Aspirin, Naproxen all NSAIDs (Not Suitable For Everyone) and Acetaminophen – this will definitely help ease those stabbing period cramp pain!
Conclusion
Periods might not always feel like a walk in the park but there’s no reason that they should prevent us from living our lives. Use one or multiple of these remedies we’ve covered whenever & wherever possible – when ninja swords come calling on your uterus you’ll be ready.
