What can cause burst blood vessels in the eye?

Let’s start by admitting that we have all experienced a burst blood vessel in our eye at some point. It can be quite startling to look in the mirror and see a small, red spot on your eyeball staring back at you. But don’t worry (not that you were), it is actually quite common and usually not a cause for concern.

However, if you find yourself repeatedly waking up with what appears to be a miniature carnage taking place on your eyeball or it seems like there are more red spots than white ones these days – then perhaps something needs investigating.

Chin up though! You’re about to get hit with an informative adrenaline boost of what might cause blood vessels rupturing inside your eyes!

The Sneeze Effect

We’ve all sneezed before (I’m just stating fact here). Sometimes when we do, our heads recoil so savagely ultra-violent gifs could arguably be made from them. This sudden movement alone can increase pressure around the head area – enough so that nerves and even tiny blood vessels swell for relief resulting in quick-to-fade redness over one’s sclera (the white part of our anatomy – yes I said anatomy).

Usually not something to worry about unless other physical symptoms present themselves beyond those “Red Littles” looking back at ya’.

Contact Lens Feuds

Contact lenses are great because they help give us superhero-like powers without any real toxic waste spill accidents involved but sometimes things can go wrong… horribly wrong.

If wearing contact lenses has become increasingly uncomfortable lately or actual discomforting pain ensues–not only due to contact lens wear–it may very well mean infection lurks nearby like an evil clown living within a storm drain waiting patiently to make its move. The infection can irritate our eyes and cause the blood vessels in them to rupture.

Before this fear takes everyone hostage, let me remind you (once again, as if someone asked) if you’re wearing contact lenses regularly but not following adequate hygiene protocols, germs can quickly find themselves sticking around longer than a high school romance (but far more unpleasant of course).

So always stick with your cleaning routine–you never really know where life will take you — may as well be prepared.

Emotional Outbursts

It’s no secret we experience an array of emotions throughout any given day – one minute we’re happy-go-lucky like a lollipop-peddling ice cream truck driver; next thing we could feel cornered into battling Godzilla. It is important to maintain balance… or else.

When faced with stressful situations, emotions are heightened causing adrenaline levels to increase which leads (Wait for it) MORE PRESSURE being placed on your head and then around your eyes.

This pressure ultimately makes small blood vessels inflate with enough vigor that they might just burst! Noticing redness or seeing visible veins slowly becoming spider-webs across our sclera after experiencing emotional highs/lows isn’t too rare since this rupturing process doesn’t involve merely physical activity- long story short: ‘Emotions run deep’, so tend to take extra care whilst handling said emotions.

Age-Related Issues

As much as we’d like it (or perhaps some folks out there wouldn’t), aging happens…it’s somewhat inevitable if living breathing organisms have something say about it.

With aging comes thinner skin tissues including those inside our bodies – even the ones in our delicate eyeballs (if such delicacy exists anymore) and this all contributes toward weakening those small blood vessels which can result in more visible veins or, yeah you guessed it! Redness.

If red-veined eyes are something experienced often then, targeting any specific contributing factors to rule out anything abnormal is probably your next step (I am the Captain now).

Shameful Habits

Two words: Smoking and Drinking. Either could lead to lack of oxygen getting in our system thus increasing susceptibility towards weakened tiny blood vessels likely leading towards bursting… but we all know this already so moving on.

Other Causes:

There are other reasons too – here’s a basic run down:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Certain Medications (Aspirin)
  • Allergies
  • Eye Strain/Lack Of Sleep

If you’re noticing regular breakouts with those little reds they may be attributed to one those above.

Conclusion

Although nobody really wants their eyeball veins resembling that of an intricate road map, a burst vessel alone isn’t typically cause for alarm – unless there’s ongoing discomfort involved or vision seems skewed as well. That being said – Listen to your body just like it works for when feeling hungry or thirsty etc; maybe give providing some extra TLC towards those sensitive peepers higher regard – not only will that enhance visual health but also avoid those “Am I about die?” freak-out moments whilst staring back into the mirror again.. and again…and again!

Take care of yourself (please) (yes talking directly at YOU): physically and emotionally because maintaining balance here on Earth does seem pretty unique considering its astronomical distances from neighboring planets/galaxies ..so keep plane-crash-like turbulence within life adjustments somewhere else than under eye & let these baby blues emanate with full vivid elegance as much as possible!
