Rock yourself to sleep with these songs with ‘Sleep’ in the title

Ah, sleep. Is there anything better than sinking into your cozy bed after a long day of work or play? Wait, don’t answer that – it’s a rhetorical question. Of course, there isn’t! But sometimes drifting off into dreamland isn’t as easy as we’d like it to be.

Well folks (1), fear not! We’ve scoured the internet and put together a list of songs with ‘sleep’ in their title guaranteed to lull you into relaxation land. So plug in those earbuds, fluff up that pillow, and let these tunes do their magic.

1. Counting Sheep

No karaoke party would be complete without this catchy tune by Safia (2). With soothing melodies and lyrics about counting sheep (the ultimate symbol of relaxation), this song is perfect for when you need some help falling asleep.

But beware: if you’re actually trying to count how many sheep you can jam-pack into one meadow – well good luck with that because apparently there’s too much contention over optimal density throughout academic circles… but I digress (3).

2. Sweet Dreams

This Eurythmics classic might just be the most famous ‘sleep’-titled song out there (4). Replete with haunting synths and Annie Lennox’s powerful vocals beckoning sweet dreams upon its listeners; it’s no surprise this jolting hymn rose towards stardom during MTVs early days / THE 80S BABY!!! /REALLY TRYING TO SHOW MY AGE HERE(5).

3. Dreams

Speaking of classics,(6) Fleetwood Mac did not disappoint fans around the world when they released track three from their album Rumours back in 1977.As Mick Fleetwood pounds his way through the drum kit with Stevie Nicks crooning, “Thunder only happens when it’s raining”, this song is the perfect choice for whenever you need to drift off into a dream world.

4. Don’t Sleep In The Subway

Petula Clark delivered one of pop music’s most memorable classics in the mid-60s about sleeping on benches and amidst other strangers. Its upbeat melody might not immediately sound like something that should be rocking you to sleep; but there’s just something about the composition that’ll leave your brains hand-drawn-out personal pleasantries naturally forging their way onto scenic mental canvases (sadly with comic sans font, so we hear…)(7).

5. Insomniac’s Lullaby

Few can soothe quite as intensely as Ed Sheeran (or recently claimed TED Chan-famous epidemiologists), and his “Insomniac’s Lullaby” proves he has a particular talent when it comes to calming anxious minds (8). It starts tentatively before launching into assurances such as: “I know I’ve got some big responsibilities/Oh, God don’t let me flop tonight,” complemented by guitars and soulful oohs-aahs (9).

6. Sleeping Satellite

Let Tasmin Archer’s ethereal voice guide you in her classic hit from early ’90s towards finding private silent retreat beneath starry skies.. or your bedside ceiling fan blades.(Sorry work calls tomorrow!)(10) You may feel momentarily conflicted regarding all those unfinished tasks hovering over yourself like the statue of Zeus at Olympia; alas! Release those tensions down into these multidimensional musical waves instead(11)!

Here are some additional songs which deserve an honorable mention – they didn’t make our top six list but have made many enthusiasts take refuge from life and sail away subliminally:

A) While You Were Sleeping

Canadian songstress, Elvis-loving, and all-around goddess in a denim jacket who had the honour of opening WeNeedaVacation; Melanie Doane’s tribute to sleeplessness proves that sometimes it takes an upbeat tempo to make one feel at home among the clouds.(12))

B) Sleep

If you’re chasing something bit more philosophical or different than usual tracks, then check out Stevie Wonder’s “Sleep” for some real va-va-voom rhythms started off by Bo Diddley carrying into an ensuing rocky instrumental frenzy .It is sure to keep your sleepy stupors simultaneously intrigued and calmed.(13)

C) Brain Damage/Eclipse

We can’t possibly discuss songs with ‘sleep’ in their title without including this stirring tune from Pink Floyd (14). Okay we cheated a little — neither of these two halves included towards the end of Mr. Sid Barret-less group’s iconic Dark Side Of The Moon album quite literally contains the word ‘sleep’ in its lyrics but they are bound together under themes relating life experiences and dreaming; hence joining them seemed apropos. So put yourself down for both haves if you’re down for delightful indulgence.

So there you have it folks – our top picks when it comes to using music as a tool for beddy-byes! What did we miss? Let us know your favorite slumber-inducing tracks!( Haha only kiddin’ please let me avoid being kicked around like an American football on Twitter – regular hate mail is bad enough thanks).
