Pulmonary fibrosis remission?

Lung diseases are not exactly the most glamorous of afflictions. They’re like that uncomfortable sweatshirt you never wear unless it’s laundry day, always present but never in your consciousness until a symptom brings them to the forefront. One such example of pulmonary disease is pulmonary fibrosis. It’s an incurable condition with limited treatment options, which sounds about as much fun as watching paint dry.

In this article, we will explore the intricacies of pulmonary fibrosis and discuss possible ways to achieve remission. So sit back, relax (or don’t), put on your thinking cap (if you have one) and enjoy!

What Is It?

Let’s start with some basic terms because nobody wants a confused reader (well at least I don’t). Pulmonary means anything relating to lungs while fibrosis refers to thickening or scarring of organ tissue.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive – meaning it gets worse over time – lung disease caused by scarring generated from inflammation in the lungs. This can occur due to many reasons including environmental factors like exposure to airborne toxins such as asbestos, silica dust or medication usage; radiation exposure; smoking etc.

The primary issue arising from this scar tissue build-up is reduced oxygen transfer between air sacs in our lungs & bloodstream leading up symptoms related shortness-of-breath, tiredness/fatigue along coughing/throat clearing episodes for those affected with PF.

  • But Wait! There’s More

PF doesn’t come alone – other associated symptoms include chest pain (which may get mistaken for Cardiovascular Disease(CVD)) and finger/toe swelling, thus making walking/doing basic movements difficult or impossible even for longer periods like 6 minutes(Did we just imply “breathing” isn’t “basic”? No? Okay Cool!).

People living with any form of PF have decreased exercise tolerance accompanied by significant reductions in lung function, much like my uncle who couldn’t run 100 meters without panting and needed a mocha frappuccino to recover.

Can It Be Treated?

Currently, there is no known cure for pulmonary fibrosis. So yeah, that’s the bad news but we’re not ones to give up hope so quickly (Start playing Survivor- Eye Of The Tiger).

While it can’t be cured, treatment options are available that aim towards managing symptoms associated with PF or course of the disease itself

Medication:

Pharmaceuticals have brought advancements in curing & treating diseases many times before (anyone remember Aspirin?). Similarly medication is commonly seen as stepping stone relief mechanism for individuals facing complications of this condition (If only we could medicate ourselves out of every problem! Sigh!).

Several drugs such as Nintedanib, Pirfenidone etc prescribed by medical health professionals show compelling impact on slowing progression of disease while corticosteroids (prednisone) helps manage inflammation inside your lungs leading to breathing difficulties.

But hey! Let’s face it. Life isn’t always rainbows and unicorns even when you’ve got cool meds on deck right? That might sound like an exciting world we all should live in (Wonderland anyone? Wait..have I mixed stories here?), but unfortunately ~not everyone is Alice~ most people would eventually end up reaching stage where medicines stop being effective.

Home Oxygen Therapy

Pulmonary Fibrosis decreases our body’s ability to transport oxygen throughout organs which means continuous low blood-oxygen levels leads worsened trauma from any sort physical exertion leading water retention(hello edema!) thus making day-to-day activities overwhelming(Task list piling up!).

A common supportive therapy which comes into play during these events – Home Oxygen Therapy). Although certainly not enough alone other management plans home oxygen provides essential breathing support and may bring immense relief to patients struggling with symptoms of PF.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehab, also known as respiratory therapy – a non-drug based treatment approach focusing on improving breathing muscle strength by personalized exercise plans (not daunting gym sessions!) customized according to capacity.

In the past few years various studies have shown that Pulmonary Rehab greatly helps in reducing severity of symptoms accompanying fibrosis escalation leading increase in performance capabilities & quality-of-life factors.

Adopting a more robust lifestyle change will better equip the body for dealing with progressively complicated health conditions. Think long-term sustainability over short-lived fixes (That’s right 60 seconds crunch challenge, leave me alone!).

Achieving Remission: A Possibility?

Now comes the million-dollar question we are all asking ourselves; can pulmonary fibrosis be cured? Unfortunately, not at this time (Sorry guys) but there is hope.

The longer answer here is- While no cure has been discovered researchers in this field explore new avenues towards achieving disease remission while scaling down progressive lung degeneration like Stem Cell Therapy or Lung transplantations which shows promising clinical results.

It’s worth noting though that transplantation may seem like miracle fix(risk & costwise too) but it absolutely isn’t recommended unless other less invasive management procedures won’t work. Meanwhile Stem-cells tries targeting underlying cellular structure repairing pathway aiming restoration of healthy tissue acting permanently as buffer preventing recurrence (so we get one shot people).

Ultimately understanding related aspects including genetics/environmental exposures helps early detection along provision timely diagnosis ensuring direction of development prospective options thus facilitating insights towards effective measures supporting symptom suppression.(Sounds simple enough doesn’t it?)

Until even more advances come our way however continuing focussing routines monitoring overall health goals diet changes accepting help from nearby family/friends remain essentials maintaining headway against super fun common lung condition ~cough cough-(pardon my lungs)-.

Conclusion

Pulmonary fibrosis is a debilitating condition that can negatively impact the quality of life for anyone unlucky to develop it. While there are currently no known cures, solid treatment options exist in managing symptoms and reducing disease progression.

Don’t forget – while living with pulmonary fibrosis isn’t easy, strength comes from taking charge & actively management by creating supportive network (no man’s an island..amirite?)
.
In conclusion folks remaining vigilant about any symptoms or changes we’ve experienced becomes determining factor when heading towards eventual cure possibilities along bringing relief essential support systems patients need on this journey!
