Mcl injury can t bend knee?

Have you ever experienced an injury to your knee and found it impossible to bend it? The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is one of the four major ligaments that provide stability in our knees. When injured, bending your knee can feel like mission impossible. Fear not! In this article, I will give you a rundown on what exactly is an MCL injury, why it happens, what symptoms to look for and how to treat it.

What Exactly Is An MCL Injury?

The MCL runs along the inner side of your knee joint connecting the thighbone and shinbone together. Its job is to prevent excess sideways movement of the lower leg bones by providing stability. However, when excessive force is applied during activities such as jumping or twisting – this can result in spraining or tearing of the MCL.

Understanding Grades of Sprains

Grade 1: A few fibres are stretched but still intact.
Grade 2: Partial tearing has occurred affecting most fibres.
Grade 3: Complete rupture which renders ligament non-functional.

Why Does It Happen & Who Is At Risk?

Some causes include contact sports where direct blows are sustained from eg; football tackles, reckless skiing incidents etc. Age also plays a role as those over 40 years old have weaker connective tissues making them more prone to injuries from regular exercise specially if there was history of previous trauma like muscle weakness/imbalances or previous surgeries involving stitches in this area

Symptoms To Look Out For During injury:

  • Pain at middle part (joint line) between thighbone/shinbone while walking/putting pressure (usually improves with rest)
  • Swelling around inside at top end above kneecap
  • MEGA-BONUS Meaningless popping sound during injury

When Should You See A Doctor?

You should see your doctor if your knee is swollen, there’s instability with walking or bending of the knee joint itself. You may also need to consider imaging such as a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan.

Treatment & Rehabilitation:

Amazing news! Majority of MCL injuries can be treated without surgery. Hoorah!
Treatment includes RICE principle: Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation.
Rehabilitation exercises include strengthening,& stretching based around stability and core muscles like quads/hamstrings/glutes plus balance/mobility drills.
That way you’ll reduce chance of reoccurence enormously!

Utilising Crutches

MAXIMISING CRUTCH PERFORMANCE FOR THOSE ON THE GO OOO_WE
It’s important not to put any high impact pressure on the affected leg especially when starting out since doing so will prevent healing from getting the boost it needs while leading to further aggravation/trauma,BUT that does not mean one has to sit around for entire time frame , NO !

Here are Some Tips To Help Maximise Performance When Using Crutches:

  • Making The First Move Start by standing at edge low stool/sturdy object then place hands on object’s top before placing crutches under arms which ensures less leg movement required with each step taken along ground level
  • Optimising Trunk Motion Lean slightly forward focusing keeping weight equally balanced over both feet – this will help generate momentum lest you end up stuck far off away from your loved ones sniff
  • SISYPHUS ROCKS ATTITUDE Whatever happens DON’T GIVE UP … It could take a couple days BUT eventually Step Outside With Confidence !! Yay!!!!!!!!!

Do Exercises That Align With Your Athletic Needs After Recovery

While performing rehab exercises, you want to do only what encompasses aligning with athletic goals.e.g. Cycling is excellent for practicing leg movement through gentle resistance, as is jogging once an orthopedist okays it.

When Can You Return To Sport?

It’s wise to wait until the MCL has healed completely which could be between 2-10 weeks depending on severity of injury before going back into activity such as sport!

Conclusion

Getting injured can never be considered a good thing because we want maximum fun time with minimum pain and intervention but rest assured that recovery after MCL tear/sprain isn’t half as bad or unmanageable when there’s emotional and physical support handy!

Stay healthy always!
