Lost Control: The Paralyzing Fear Within

Have you ever felt like you’re losing control of your life? Like everything is slipping through your fingers faster than a greased-up watermelon at a summer festival? Congrats, my friend, you are not alone! In fact, there’s a whole cohort of us out here trying to navigate this crazy thing called “adulting” and feeling like we’re failing every step of the way. But don’t worry – I’ve got some tips and tricks to help you regain control and put that paralyzing fear back in its box.

Unpacking the Paralysis

Paralysis: I’m not talking about the kind where you suddenly can’t move anything below the neck (that’s a different article altogether), but rather that pesky little voice inside your head that tells you “you can’t” or “what’s the point?” We all experience this from time to time – maybe it shows up as procrastination or avoidance tactics when faced with difficult tasks. Or maybe it seeps into our relationships, making us second-guess ourselves or avoid conflict. Either way, it sucks.

So why does this happen? Well, there are plenty of theories out there – some say it comes from childhood experiences or trauma; others blame societal pressure for success and perfectionism. Whatever its origins may be, one thing is certain: when we give in to that paralysis and let it dictate our actions (or lack thereof), we only end up reinforcing those negative thought patterns.

Reclaiming Agency

Agency: This fancy word just means having power over your own choices and actions. And guess what? You already have agency within yourself…you just might need some practice flexing those muscles! Here are some ways to get started:

Make Lists

- Write down everything on your mind.
- Prioritize by importance.
- Start with small tasks first.

There’s something satisfying about crossing things off a to-do list, right? Even if they’re small or seemingly insignificant, each completed task is another win for you. Plus, organizing your thoughts in this way can help break down overwhelming projects or goals into more manageable pieces.

Seek Support

You don’t have to do everything alone! Surround yourself with people who lift you up and believe in you – whether that’s friends, family members, or a therapist. Having someone else provide an outsider’s perspective can sometimes be just the push we need to get moving.

Take Action (even when it’s scary)

This might be the hardest part – actually doing something. It doesn’t have to be anything big…just taking one step forward towards your goal can give you momentum and motivation. Remember: progress isn’t always linear; there will inevitably be setbacks along the way – but that doesn’t mean giving up!
