If you’re anything like me, you might be wondering if there’s some magical blood test that can tell you all about your folic acid levels. And thankfully, there is! In this article, we’ll dive into the world of folic acid, explain what the heck it even is, and explore how to find out if your levels are up to snuff.
First off: What even is folic acid?
Folic acid, also known as folate or Vitamin B9 (because apparently three names were just not enough), is a crucial nutrient that helps with cell growth and DNA formation. It’s especially important during periods of rapid growth like pregnancy or adolescence. Basically, folic acid does some pretty darn important stuff in your body.
Why should I care about my folic acid levels?
While nobody likes being told what to do (especially by their own bodies), having low levels of folic acid can lead to anemia, birth defects, and gastrointestinal problems. No thank you!
So how do I know if my levels are too low?
Luckily for us non-medical professionals who don’t want to go around stabbing ourselves with needles willy-nilly, there is indeed a blood test available at most doctor’s offices that can measure your current level of serum folate – aka plasma concentration – another term medical peeps love throwing around.
The normal range for serum folate falls between 2-20 ng/mL, so be sure that number scales somewhere within these dimensions!
Fun fact: while measuring plasma concentrations means drawing blood from our veins but they’re not equivalent; Plasma = fluid component plus cells minus coagulation factors while Serum equals fluid component without clotting factors! Now do yourself a favor; wash out those old notebooks filled with lab reports cos today we getting schooled!
What if my levels are too low?
Now you might be thinking, “What the heck do I do if that blood test comes back with less folate than a crouton?” (we told you we’d use uncommon terminology). Good news: there are plenty of folic acid-rich foods to eat your fill. You can chomp on spinach, lentils, and asparagus all day long! And for those who despise green veggies like a toddler at dinnertime? There are also supplements available like multivitamins, chewables etc. However most medical experts recommend increasing consumption via natural sources preceding supplementation.
But wait…can’t I just take in TOO MUCH folic acid?
Yes, indeed it is possible (spoiler alert) folks can get over-fortified with this stuff by consuming too many fortified cereals & vitamin supplements – making their serum concentration levels become quite disproportionate.
Excess may lead to changes in URINE output or even bring about some gastrointestinal symptoms among patients– ain’t no fun having these!
It’s spooky out here especially that high doses of Folate consumption have been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers; sooooo how much is enough/too much? – A regular 400 milligrams daily intake for adults up till age 50 & thereafter should tilt upwards fall within safe limits.
- Folic acid helps our bodies grow and develop.
- Low levels of folic acid can cause anemia, blind spots amidst color gradient perception, birth defects, and other nastiness.
- A simple blood test can tell us whether we’re deficient
- Normal Ranges fall between 2ng/mL:
Low-Concentration Folates = <3 ng/mL : indicates deficiency
Optimal Range= >5 ng/ml
Well , what else is important ? The tests must be conducted while not on any supplements can interfere with results or alcohol consumption, a negative effect on red cell folate concentrations thus compromising reliability of results.
Folic acid may not be the most well-known nutrient out there, but its importance to our overall health cannot be overstated. So if you’re feeling a little run down and wondering just what in tarnation is going on with your body – get yourself tested for serum folate! It’s an easy test that could make all the difference for your continued wellbeing.
