Is sorbet bad for you?

Do you ever crave something sweet and refreshing but worry about the calories? Fear not my health conscious friends, because I am here to investigate whether sorbet is bad for you or not. From its fruity flavors to its icy texture, sorbet has been a popular dessert choice for generations. But is there a catch? Let’s dig deeper and find out!

What exactly is sorbet?

First things first – what even is sorbet? Sorbet is a frozen dessert made from fruit puree, sugar syrup, water, and sometimes alcohol. It has a similar texture to ice cream but without any dairy products.

The myth of ‘healthy’ desserts

We’ve all heard someone say “I’m going to have the insert name salad/dessert because it’s healthy”. But let’s face it- just because it appears healthier than other options on the menu doesn’t mean that it actually IS good for us. So where does that leave our beloved little cups of heaven- aka sorbet?

Breaking down the Calories

The main reason why some people may blindly assume that all desserts are equally unhealthy lies in their calorie intake. For instance stick with me now- If consuming half cup serving each amounting anywhere between 100 – 150 calories early everyday then we’re fueling ourselves with empty calories.

Here’s table summarising Nutrient content per serving:

Nutrients Amount Per Serving (1/2 Cup)
Calories 110
Total fat 0 grams
Cholesterol 0 milligrams
>Speech bubbles: Now this may look like angelic nutrition facts compared to your tubs of ice cream…

Hidden sugars

If you look at most store-bought versions including candies (hint cough cough.. skittles) contain high amounts of added sugar. Well, make no mistake that sorbet too has a calorie intake just the same amountof sugar as ice cream. Proving again how deceiving it could very well be.

It is recommended for an adult to consume not more than 24 grams (6 teaspoons) of added sugar per day and one cup of sorbet contains approximately 25-30 grams depending on the brand / flavour so much looks like enjoying this dessert often for once can drive our diet towards unwanted route.
To add more salt in the wound Sorbets are no different from those ‘low-fat’ misleading advertisements when they claim consuming product helps lead healthier lifestyle choices.

Less fat..or…?

Since there is no milk or eggs used in preparation, sorbet may gram-for-gram contain fewer calories than traditional dairy-based desserts such as classic vanilla bean ice cream (around 14 -18 calories lesser) but hold up!

We needn’t forget that all sugary products digest speedily which leaves us feeling hungry sooner thereby making susceptible to over eating later leading into end further weight gain plus increasing hunger pangs since lack of protein and fiber available in these largely does its job slower

Also with low-fibre nature contributes significantly to causing issues regarding digestion since fibre plays significant role here – So while a fresh fruit salad will have some dietary fiber berries within would’ve lost their fibrous hypoglycemic index during processing meaning you’re getting some vitamins & antioxidants sure but at cost of sweetener without any satiety effect

Effectively saying: Consuming Sorbets | any frozen desert simple truth still remains shouldn’t be pivot point meal plans otherwise serving cups wouldn’t wear warned signs!!

As mentioned earlier always use bullet points!

So let’s present facts from the perspective of Benefits vs Disadvantages/risks because why not? In fact, I’m going tell on your behalf what I use as excuse while ordering Tiramisu at that fancy resto #NoJudgements

Weighing Benefits and Risks:

Advantages of Sorbet

  • Sorbet contains a certain percentage of vitamins & minerals By the time sorbets arrive in market, manufacturing methods for increasing fruit content without using preservatives have shown to increase nutritional quotient thereby enabling high levels of nutrients.

  • Since it is prepared mainly with fresh fruits it does contain antioxidants which contribute to keeping immune system strong.

  • In fact, we can’t deny but sorbets (note: some flavours) are suitable for vegans due to its lack milk/eggs in their processing)

Risks/ disadvantages

But despite above mentioned benefits Remember though enjoying anything(not only food products); moderation is key. Overconsumption still brings following dangers around:

  1. As mentioned earlier one built-in disadvantage(perhaps serving psycopaths favourite technique) i.e delicious servings lead people into overeating causing excess calories anxiety about losing them [which may or may not be chased via fad diets]

  2. Regular consumption risks inviting sugar spikes exposing individuals leading healthy lifestyles at risk countless waterfalls accompanied by Insta stories documenting misery ridden days during detox months like January

3: Dieticians advise watching out heavy chemicals used in artificial flavoring, coloring and stabilisation agents present normally drinking / processed foods because when consumes regularly leaded  to damages  on liver eventually leading towards diseases such as Fatty Liver Disease( Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis ) this won’t happen overnight obviously rather developing slowly gradually after years of unchecked Use

4.Often has excessive amount added sugar often usually isn’t within daily recommended limits hence potentially cause tooth decay overtime.

Incase you’re wondering : The verdict about Sorbet tends depends on balance strike between having occasional scoop vs gorging yourselves up ; So, concluding in this article (crap I used ‘in this article’) would not be fair. Till next time!
