Is ribena acidic or alkaline?

If you’re like me and have been downing cartons of Ribena since childhood, then understanding the pH level of this beloved beverage can be a topic of heated debate. Does it fall on the acidic or alkaline side? Well, let’s dive into this conundrum with all its juicy details.

Introduction to pH Levels

Before we jump right into whether Ribena is acidic or alkaline, let’s take a moment to understand what these terms actually mean.

The measure of acidity and alkalinity lies in the potential hydrogen (pH) scale from 0-14. A substance that falls below 7 on the pH scale is considered acidic and anything above 7 is considered alkaline. A substance with a pH level at precisely seven is neutral (yawn).

Is Ribena an Acid?

Ribena indeed has citric acid as one of its primary components; hence it does have some acidic properties. But how much citric acid exactly? According to various sources online, about two percent of Ribenas’ total content constitutes primarily Citric acid (wow!).

This inclusion may sound alarming for someone who might be extremely health concerned because it’s an acid. However, it seems that not all acids are created equal when it comes to their effect on our bodies.

For instance, apples contain malic acid which brightens teeth whereas lemon juice corrodes human enamel due to its low ph value so in comparison Citric %2 sounds quite harmless (fruity good news).

When consuming citric acid-containing drinks like Orange Juice enriched with spongy bread slices without brushing your teeth afterwards could lead lead early tooth decay!

What About Other Acids?

While most fruit juices will contain varying amounts of different types of acids such as tartaric or oxalic acids . As mentioned earlier , Ribena predominantly contains citric acid which has the potential to erode tooth coatings .

Is Ribena an Alkali?

Now, for the fun part “Is ribena alkaline?” – let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. It is only fair to discuss the science behind our palette’s perception and what affects it first.

Sometimes acidity might be mistaken for sourness due to its direct effect on taste receptors in the tongue. Interestingly enough there isn’t a high store of exclusive candy labelled as basic except perhaps ‘milk chocolate’ (not really?).

Acidic or sour foods activate your taste receptors and trick your brain into producing saliva.
Over time, your body adapts accordingly by preparing itself mentally anticipating more acidic stimuli (clever eh).

What Makes Ribena Tasty Then?

Maybe I personally have grown on this fruity goodness primarily served cool or iced particularly during warm weather but let me share some other reasons too :

1- Blackcurrants that are compacted together to give us that delicious juice are known for their tart flavour. According to scientists from many universities including Reading , black currants also develop these special pungent-tasting aromas after being subjected a process called thermal treatment ‘which makes them even tastier’!

2- Alternatively artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame & Acesulfame K concocted thereafter came with those juicy packs rank higher at sweetness inducing competition without escalating sugar levels beyond limits,

3- Sugar (obviously) plays no small role either although we’re all aware how consuming lotsa of Ribe-sugar can undermine one’s wellness 🙁

4 – Finally one significant factor behind Ribenas’ lasting success is marketing; visually pleasing packaging provides enough allure making it feel like i’m drinking straight from crystallised blackcurrant nectar (yum!).

Even More Ribena Goodness

Let’s be honest, Ribena has been a staple drink in the UK since like forever. And from our time of massive intake of Pink syrup during childhood to drinking “sophisticated” cartons as adults, there is no denying that it is a crowd favourite.

But did you know;
Ribena was originally used by Viennese scientist Charles Neaves to counter vitamin C deficiency in children back when rationing was prevalent.
First launched commercially in 1936 exclusively sold via pharmacies and eventually acquired by Lucozade Ribena Suntory

Wow, who would have thought that this beloved drink with its acidic properties can be so culturally significant?

The Verdict: Acidic or Alkaline?

So after all this scientific mumbo-jumbo- what’s the verdict? Is Ribena an acid or alkali?

Based on its overall composition and pH level around 3 (around lemon juice ), we can conclude that drum rolls please, yes – Ribena indeed lies on the acidic end! (oh dear)

But before you go mourning your fave berry flavour beverage let’s remember one important fact – Since Citric acid has benefits such as enhancing digestive processes within human bodies including vitamin c potential – consuming moderate amounts of frequently also significantly reduce hunger pangs ( but i wouldn’t recommend going overboard ) . In other words increasing fruit consumption directly plan unhealthy cravings helps towards greater wellness .

By now, hopefully, you’ve come around to realising how little it matters whether your favourite drink falls under ‘acid’ or ‘alkaline’. It’s always better to focus on maintaining balance causing minimal damage instead constantly worrying over every single thing consumed daily

Surely moderation whilst being intentional about balancing food types leads one slowly towards achieving greater overall well-being doesn’t sound too bad right folks ?

And as for Ribena, It might be acidic but This delightful drink is certainly an occasional heartthrob!
