Is hyaluronic acid an aha or bha?

Are you confused about whether hyaluronic acid is an AHA or BHA? Fear not, my dear reader, for I am here to clear up the confusion once and for all. This article will discuss what AHAs and BHAs are, what hyaluronic acid is, and the differences between them.

The World of Acids

Before we dive into whether hyaluronic acid is an AHA or a BHA, let’s first understand what these two terms mean.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)

AHAs are water-soluble acids that are derived from fruit sources. They work by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. By doing so, they help to exfoliate the skin and improve its texture.

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

BHAs are oil-soluble acids that work differently than AHAs. Instead of working on the surface of your skin like AHAs do, BHAs can penetrate deeper into your pores to unclog them. Salicylic acid is one example of a commonly used BHA in skincare products.

Now that we know what AHAs and BHAs are let’s move onto our main topic: hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic Acid 101

Hyaluronic acid (hy-uh-loo-roh-nik) refers to a naturally occurring carbohydrate molecule found in our bodies’ connective tissue – think bones – as well as our eyes ๐Ÿ‘€! Here comes some biochemistry stuff…

This gooey substance holds fluids inside tissues providing moisture๐Ÿงผ since . Its role is vital for many body parts ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘›’t live without it!

Hyaluronan exists in many biological fluids including synovial fluid whichโ€ฆ hold on just wait…jaw-clinching…wait ๐‘›๐‘œ. Don’t make me start with medical terminologies here folks!๐Ÿ’‰

Let’s get back to hyaluronic acid in skincare.

Hyaluronic Acid in Skincare Products

Hyaluronic acid is often used as an ingredient in many skincare products because of its ability to retain water molecules within the skin๐Ÿ˜ฝ, thus keeping it hydrated and plump. A typical application is via serums that lock moisture into the epidermis (topmost layer of skin) through a non-greasy formula – awesome, right? ๐Ÿ˜

However, unlike AHAs and BHAs which exfoliate or penetrate the skin respectively, hyaluronic focuses on drawing and retaining H2O instead ๐Ÿ’ฆ This distinction gives rise to frequent questions relating hyaluronic acid alongside other acids .Is it classified as an AHA since they all seem similar?

After long hours of research whilst Vivaldi was playing- I can assure you this(๏พ‰โ—•ใƒฎโ—•)๏พ‰:๏ฝฅ๏พŸโœง:

The Verdict…

drum roll

Hyaluronic acid does not classify under either alpha or beta hydroxy/beta hydroxide groups โŒ !

It has its unique properties when applied topically.

Unlike ฮฑ-hydroxy acids and ฮฒ-hydroxy acids. Hyaluronanic doesn’t cause any irritation when applied making it great for most people- even those with sensitive skins !

Myth Busting: 1 Ingredient Hand Lotion vs Water๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

One common myth about hydrating lotions containing only Aqua (water) without including emollients or occlusives such as vaseline, petrolatum hurts us more than help!

Applying water on its own can lead to mere dryer skin, due to the escape of hydration from the surface layers. Dabbing on an all-in-one single-ingredient lotion compounded for our hands would not cut it!

That being said though ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ Did you know hyaluronic acid is often used in hand creams as well?

I hope this article has been a helpful guide in clearing up whether hyaluronic acid is an AHA or BHA. Remember that when it comes to skincare ingredients , every key feature and term counts! Keep educating yourself – knowledge empowers us into revealing answers we’ve always searched for.
