Is continuous birth control safe?

Are you tired of your monthly cycle turning you into a grumpy, bloated version of yourself? Do you dread the thought of unplanned pregnancies more than root canals or getting stuck in traffic with your in-laws? Fear not; continuous birth control may be just what the doctor (not WebMD) ordered.

The lowdown on continuous birth control

Continuous birth control is exactly what it sounds like; it’s taking contraceptives continuously without any interruptions. In other words, no placebo pills and no week-long breaks to allow for menstruation.

This method has been gaining popularity among women worldwide who are seeking to manage their menstrual cycles better while preventing pregnancy. But before considering this option as something akin to unicorn-like magic, there are some facts we need to go through – because let’s face it – none of us wants an unwanted medical surprise; especially after skipping out on periods (unless we’re talking about high school P.E).

How does it work?

Our bodies produce estrogen and progestin hormones that regulate our menstrual cycles naturally. However, birth control stops ovulation from occurring by increasing these hormones’ levels artificially.

In standard contraceptives following a 28-day cycle, each pill consists of three weeks containing synthetic hormones plus one week (usually referred to as “placebo week”) where sugar/saline tablets or inactive ingredients are taken instead so that menstruation occurs.

Conversely, continuous birth controls consist entirely of hormone-containing active pills daily which prevent ovulation altogether- thus circumventing those expensive tampons and pads! (seriously consider investing in menstrual cups)

Types

There are two types:

  1. Combination Pills:
These contain both synthetic versions of estrogen/progesterone.
  2. Progestin-only Pills:
These only contain progesterone but lack systemic effects the former emanates i.e. hinders inhibition of ovulation.

Depending on your healthcare provider’s recommendation, you might be put on the continuous pill for periods ranging between six and twelve weeks with a maximum extension of about 12 months .results in zero ovulation and less endometrial shedding while reducing hormonal fluctuations to their most favorable level.

The big question – is it safe?

You probably thought all that talk about hormones would mean this wasn’t a full-proof plan- but fear not! There are specific benefits to note:

  1. Reduced cramps
  2. Lighter or no periods
  3. Decreased health issues

That’s right folks, not having periods may open up other possibilities worth considering aside from enjoying an extended staycation whilst wearing those cute period panties (you know what we’re talking about).

Keep in mind though that just as ‘no good deed goes unpunished,’ this technique isn’t without side effects either:

  1. Irregular bleeding
  2. Breast tenderness
  3. Headaches/migraines
    4 Weight variations
    5 Mood swings

But wait; there’s more (we wish we were selling shake weights). These symptoms usually fade once your body has adjusted; just like trying out new supplements at the gym upon initial use (your body will likely retaliate- but trust us, stick with them – perseverance is key!)

The fact of the matter is different solutions work best for different people so introducing someone else’s regime into your life can come with some unforeseen challenges – which are normal!

Overall, Continuous birth control comes with increased convenience since bleeding becomes optional rather than incentivized by hormone count-down interruptus.(this pun deserves praise!)

Bringing it home

If anything seems off when going through these changes – make sure to consult a medical professional (either online or at an actual clinic).

It’s always better erring on the side of caution when addressing any health-related matter. Finally, if you have hit that wall with birth control options and the monthly hormone rollercoaster – then this is a valid option worth considering (see what we did there?)

Remember to be kind to yourself – periods can be debilitating! Maybe treat yourself afterward (shopping spree anyone?). Life’s too short for mood swings all month long(I mean, really!) Giving continuous birth control a chance could make your life simpler and perhaps more enjoyable!. So why not take an extra day or two before running back into the menstrual cramp maze…your future self will surely thank you for it- second opinions from reality show hosts on medical procedures are never recommended (trust us on this one) !
