Is chicken broth considered a clear liquid diet?

Picture this, it’s Monday morning, and you’re feeling like you got hit by a truck. Your stomach feels funny, everything hurts, and the last thing on your mind is food – yet here we are. Real talk: you’ve probably heard of several diets throughout your life. Among them, there’s one whose good reputation precedes itself largely due to its effectiveness in helping patients recover quickly: enter liquid diet.

What is a clear liquid diet?

A clear liquid diet can be described as an extreme measure taken when undergoing medical procedures for illnesses such as bowel obstruction or surgery preparation that may require you not to eat solid foods( aka The Bee Gees). According to medical research professionals, the following beverages/foods might qualify:

  • Water
  • Juices (without pulp)
  • Plain Tea
  • Black Coffee
    and now….

Drumroll Please…

Chicken broth! Yes madams et messieurs (yes sirs) , chicken broth IS included in the list of acceptable consumables while adhering to a clear liquid diet plan. Not only does chicken soup help with hydration during illness but also provides our bodies with critical nutrients usually lost during these times.

If there was ever going to be any reason for me to justify my love for Campbell’s Chicken soup from childhood…This would be IT!

We could go right ahead and end things right here….but before we do…

But wait…There’s More!

Just like any other scenario (because nothing is simple), just because something falls within said parameters doesn’t automatically make it healthy or free rein allowed access into your bodyspace – i.e., not all broths are created equal.

So how can you ensure that what goes down doesn’t get stuck in places it wasn’t welcome?

Let me introduce us two un-conjoined Twins; ‘clear’ vs.’cloudy’ broths.

Clear vs. Cloudy Broth- What’s the difference?

Think of unfiltered water vs filtered water; while both are technically drinkable drinking, one is healthier/cleaner than the other (you already knew this.)

When it comes to clear broth limits foods/beverages like creamed soup and OJ (mmm sour patch kids remix?) as their cloudiness from solid particulates doesn’t pass muster during the approval process. Generally speaking, clear liquids are easy on your body – i.e., fewer solids = less work for your stomach.

A cloudy broth can originate from more natural compositions with bones, fresh herbs/veggies acting as home-made filtration systems by removing impurities released during cooking processes that might upset your tummy if consumed in copious amounts.

Don’t go running towards dark chicken meat anytime soon though because not all boxed brands earn a spot at the gold standards table if our mission was trying to keep strict adherence within safe chemical compounds recommendations against MSG(high sodium) and food additives.

In short-boxed or canned (deja vu anyone?) broths marked clear/golden cups have two paws unto themselves(right up my alleys): low salt! Low salt-ed soups contain around 140 mg per serving taste(fingers crossed) just like grandma used to make but without you jumping on any fluid restrictions placed upon you by health care practitioners….win-win?
