Is bottled spring water purified?

Welcome, my fellow water enthusiasts! Buckle up, grab a bottle of spring water and enjoy this enlightening journey with me. Today we’re answering the age-old question: Is bottled spring water purified? You ready? Let’s dive in!

What is Bottled Spring Water?

Before we decode whether it’s purified or not, let’s define what bottled spring water is. According to our beloved FDA (Food and Drug Administration) – “Bottled water that comes from an underground source must also meet FDA And Environmental Protection Agency regulations for ensuring its safety”.

Sounds impressive right?! Okay, but more specifically…bottled spring water typically comes from aquifers, which are layers beneath the earth that collect rainwater and filter it through rocks naturally over time.

What makes it so high-quality compared to tap-water you ask? It’s because of the natural filtration process; minerals pass into the groundwater as rivers run over them gradually. So then why would we ever think about purifying such magnificent liquid treasure?!

The Purification Myth

Contrary to popular belief (and clever marketing tactics), bottled spring waters should never be called “purified”. Now hear me out before you throw any big-brand named bottles at your screen! Notice above I said “high-quality” NOT pure- Hmmm- MIND BLOWN RIGHT?! Shock factor alert

But wait a minute…what’s all this stuff about flavorings and purification processes listed on some brands’ ingredients list?!
It’s true some companies may use additional methods like reverse osmosis or UV light treatments to cleanse their products appropriately of chemicals or bacteria risks during packaging inspections/cycles.

These added steps could reduce included minerals/nutrient levels though potentially rendering the label “spring” inaccurate per legal requirements. But honestly who cares when your thirst is quenched after chugging down crystal clear unbeatable premium Aqua that some chemist has played with until it’s the purest form of dihydrogen monoxide!

It’s All About The Label

Let us examine quickly what each label means:

  • Natural Water : water from underground springs, rivers or lakes but may have been bottled elsewhere. Nothing added nothing removed.

  • Purified Water: water that undergoes deionization or distillation to remove minerals in order to control varying tastes and ensure a consistent product.

  • Mineral Water: natural mineral additives found within the source-water giving “life-enhancing” properties through elements such as Calcium, Magnesium, Iron + Potassium present often listed.

  • Springwater: ground water rising naturally to the surface; not treated in any way besides minimal bacteria sanitisation where required for safety purposes like Wishing Wells etc 😉.

So Why Do We Need “Purification” Anyways?

If spring water is so darn amazing why would we need further purification anyways? I’ll tell you – all sources/watersheds might carry microscopic harmful foreign substances like bacteria traces (E.Coli anyone?) during transportation/packaging lapsed times which can be easily neutralized by adequate sanitation efforts only using gravity sand filters when needed.

For example..if there are pollutants near/around/overhead of a coveted aquifer system…it will penetrate into those drinking station points and we do NOT want our sweet sweet Aquafina influenced by Debbie dumping chocolate milk into her field cough “organic fertilizer.” 😷 So yeah basically humans can screw up anything given enough time opportunity so better safe than sorry right!

All real genuine natural mineral waters/springwaters should technically never require purifying alone due to their location origin point before collection typically being far away from contaminant labelled areas via geologic aquifers maps available online if researched properly-hardly an issue for those sleek-bottled guys on shelves.

Let’s Compare The Two: Spring Water Vs Purified

So here’s where we compare and get all scientific! A delightful table for your viewing and comparison pleasure:

Type Pros Cons
Natural Spring Water Natural minerals, typically tastes better, healthier? (well…more vitamins n cheap shots!) Risk of natural pollutants in areas around collection point
or during transport
partially filtered only + can expire shelf life wise alone. Plus unsure if it counts towards step tracker daily goal🤔 (Totally does)

Purified-Bottled water Consistently safe to drink

Flavor is always uniform/stable unlike “Natural” labels but Boring/can develop plastic taste through package or chemical sanitation stages used.

Harmful bacteria/contaminants removed
Does not carry trace elements like Iron, Magnesium/Calcium

Better than tap?! Yes, definitely… however label begs question of true health benefits/renewed freshness levels after consumption while still amusingly ending up tasting SUPER dull most times unless enhanced with caffeine etc.

Both choices hold a specific set of advantages/drawbacks overall when compared but deciding what might be the best depending on each person’s unique individual needs/preferences/excuses/etc hold as much value as each media company spends advertising how pure their super special blend curation truly stands out amongst others similar lobbied products don’t forget sarcasm smile.

To Wrap It Up…

To answer our initial debatable inquiry – nope bottled spring water should never technically require any purification processes…but after hearing about bacterial microbes lingering possibilities nobody will blame you if you feel an urge to sanitize the crap outta that pretty new Evian bottle before chugging it mid hot-yoga class. Overall…the difference is simply how companies market their drinks-but regardless whether labelled purified or spring water, each has its own set of unique attributes – it’s all about finding what works best for YOU…wait for it..drumroll

“Stay hydrated my friends…”

P.S. Now time to run off and put that corporate big wig in Fiji in place! 💪🌴
