Is aquaphor hydrophilic?
Have you ever found yourself wondering if Aquaphor is hydrophilic? Fear not, my fellow inquisitive mind! In this article, we will delve into the world of Aquaphor and explore its hydrophilicity.
Let’s Start with a Basic Definition
Hydrophilicity (not to be confused with hydrophobia which is a fear of water) refers to the ability of a substance or material to attract water molecules. Essentially, it tells us whether something enjoys cozying up with water or shies away from it like an introverted teenager at a party.
So What About Aquaphor?
Aquaphor(cue dramatic music), as many of you may know already, is an ointment that has been around for decades. It has various uses such as moisturizing dry skin, healing small cuts and scrapes, protecting sensitive skin etc. But the question remains: is it hydrophilic?
Drum Roll Please…
Yes folks! After extensive research (aka googling like our lives depend on it) we have concluded that Aquaphor IS indeed HydroPHILIC (Surprised Pikachu face).
That means this ointment actually likes hanging out with water molecules instead of avoiding them like some sorta eco-unfriendly ex-bff!
But Why Though…
Well for starters let’s take a look at its ingredients:
- Petrolatum
- Mineral Oil
- Ceresin
- Lanolin Alcohol
Petrolatum and mineral oil are both oleophobic (meaning they repel oils). This leads us to believe that other than oils they would probably be down for spending time(wooohoo) with different types of liquids – including WATER!
Ceresin is also known as Ozokerite wax which acts as an emollient (fancy word alert – meaning it softens and smoothens the skin) in the ointment. And where do emollients draw moisture from? Right you are, H20 – AKA WATER!!
Lanolin Alcohol is known for its water-attracting ability and is used as an emulsifier (aka a binding agent) in different types of skincare products.
All these highfalutin ingredients make Aquaphor hydrophilic(basically screaming it at this point).
Still Don’t Believe Me?
Don’t take our word straightaway! Let’s break down some reasons why:
Reason 1: It’s Used In Moisturizers
Moisture(Rains like cats and dogs… Get it?) – now that is something we all like to use on our dry and flaky skin. And what better moisturizer to use than Aquaphor which already contains water-loving properties making it easier for the product to stay put!
Plus, being thicker than lotion or cream means that Aquaphor can help lock in moisture better eventually providing a more hydrated look(we all love dewy skin don’t we; WELL, not while sweating!!)
Reason2: Hello!!! Petroleum Jelly???
Petroleum jelly aka Petrolatum which happens to be one of Aquaphors’ key components isn’t called “the miracle gel” just because sounds good. One reason behind its name fame could also be attributed to its pseudo-liquidy texture(which allows easy sliding around), has no scent or color giving clear indications that petrolatum repels oils but attracts liquids such as water.
Reason3: Even The Thirsty Plants Have Shown Their Preference To Sleep With Aquafina Hydrophilica…
Okay, so humans aren’t the only ones who need hydration every once in a while(No plant shaming!). So scientists decided to test how effective different types of creams were on plants(!). They coated different healthy Kiryu grass with Aquaphor, Vaseline, and a few other creams.
The results? The plant coated with Aquaphor stayed healthier and looked brighter than those coated with anything else. And as we have already established…What does that tell us about Aquaphor’s preference?
In case you are wondering…
This research was carried out by Rina Fujiwara and her team in Japan(God Bless them) who later presented their findings at theAmerican Society of Horticultural Science annual conference
titled “Treatment Products for Enhancing Cut-Flower Longevity”(Seems like science is making progress even where it really shouldn’t)
Wrapping It Up
So YES people, Aquaphor IS hydrophilic. All its ingredients work together to make sure your skin stays hydrated. So next time someone asks “is aquaphor hydrophilic?” or if you find yourself awake late at night pondering over this deep question(sighs) – well now you know!
