Is a smoker healthy?

Let’s be honest here… smoking is not exactly known for being the healthiest of pastimes. Even casual smokers will tell you about the coughing fits, wheezing, and other unpleasant side effects they experience from puffing away on cigarettes. But despite all this evidence to the contrary, there are still those who swear up and down that smoking can actually be good for you (cue eye roll). So let’s dive into the age-old debate once and for all: is a smoker really healthy?

Smoking as an Art Form

Before we get too deep into the weeds (er… tobacco leaves?) of whether or not smoking is healthy, we should probably first touch upon why people smoke in the first place. For many folks who enjoy a good drag now and then (or all day every day), it’s less about any perceived health benefits than it is about indulging in one of life’s great pleasures.

Yes, there truly are some individuals out there who view smoking as an art form, savoring each inhale and exhale like sommeliers at a wine tasting. And while their lungs may suffer in the process (not to mention everyone else around them), there’s no doubt that those moments of pure enjoyment make it all worth it… right?

The Case for Smokers’ Health Benefits

Okay okay, so maybe not everyone thinks quite THAT highly of smoking. But even if they don’t consider themselves connoisseurs of carcinogens, some people still believe that having a cigarette now and then can actually have some positive health effects.

Take Hollywood icon Humphrey Bogart; despite having smoked two packs per day throughout his adult life (say what?), he lived until age 57 before succumbing to cancer (okay maybe not something to aspire toward though). And while Bogart may be an extreme example, he’s far from the only person who has lived a relatively long and healthy life in spite of regular smoking.

In fact, some studies have suggested that moderate smoking can actually reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, as well as potentially slowing the development of Alzheimer’s (but let’s not forget about all those other unhealthy side effects like lung cancer and heart diseases). So maybe smokers aren’t completely doomed after all… right?

The Reality of Smoking-Related Health Problems

Welllll, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. While it’s true that some smokers manage to live longer (and even healthier) lives than they’d expect given their habits, there is still overwhelming evidence linking tobacco use with a wide variety of health problems (like really everything you can imagine).

For starters, smoking dramatically increases one’s risk for lung cancer – by up to 15 times compared to non-smokers. It also heightens the likelihood “nastygrams” such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), emphysema, pneumonia, asthma attacks, cavities, gum disease (okay getting carried away…) or heart disease (meaning no matter what we do/don’t know about this magical substance—tobacco—you can never win). On top of ALL THAT though; secondhand smoke poses its own set of issues. Isolate yourselves from me please!

Unraveling Some Misconceptions About Smoking

Use every chance

So we’ve established that smoking isn’t exactly ideal for maintaining good health (shocker). But before we wrap things up entirely on this subject,(speaking without any proof here so buckle up!) there are at least two popular misconceptions many people hold when it comes to lighting up(what else?)…

Misconception #1: E-Cigs are healthier than traditional cigarettes

It’s true that vaping isn’t as harmful to your body compared to inhaling smoke from a burning cigarette (even tobacco free is not the case/zero). But that doesn’t mean e-cigarettes themselves are entirely healthy in gory detail (both lungs, heart and mouth get hurt!). Researchers have found links to lung illnessesyerk for one. So it’s certainly no safer alternative, sorry folks!

Misconception #2: Smoking marijuana isn’t actually smoking…

Alright folks, let’s clear some things up right off the bat here… Sparks fly when you light any plant on fire and inhale its fumesyes you feel me…. (offering sage wisdom xD) Yes,smoking weed is indeed a form of smoking(though hopefully the substances being burned aren’t riddled with all these chemicals).

So while getting high may be fun and enjoyable for many tokers out there, you shouldn’t assume that swapping out cigarettes for Mary Jane will make everything A-Okay… or even preferable definitely go check-in with your doctors if had enough of it (or anything) before shifts blame.

Wrapping Things Up: Is a Smoker Healthy?

Once again, this age-old question has been tackled from every angle imaginable, leaving us no closer to any definitive answers. On one hand, there are always those rare smokers who seem able to defy all logic by living long lives pest-free despite their habits—expertise that we don’t encourage looking into.

On the other hand though, overwhelming evidence points towards smokers experiencing negative health effects ranging from chronic coughing fitsto serious illness—if not sooner then later . At minimum; bad teeth such as gum disease leaves everyone sheltered from windy mouths too so let’s give that some thoughts guys!

At the end of day; whether you choose to smoke or not udon’ want too much of that happy stuff either, will depend largely on how much you’re willing to gamble in regards to your health. So whether it’s cigarettes, cigars or e-cigs;(not friendly reminders)be sure to weigh the risks and benefits before lighting up folks!
