I’ll Forever Hold: My ‘I’ll Never Let Go’ Tattoo

It all started with a few too many glasses of wine and an impulsive decision that would change my life forever (well, at least my skin). There I was, sitting in the tattoo parlor, staring down at the design for my new ink. It wasn’t just any tattoo – it was a ‘Titanic’-inspired masterpiece that read “I’ll never let go.” And while some may call me crazy for getting such a bold statement permanently etched onto my body, I have no regrets (except maybe not switching to water before jumping straight into tequila shots).

The Backstory

In case you were living under a rock or had your head stuck in your algebra textbook during the early 2000s, ‘Titanic’ is one of the most iconic movies ever made. Starring Leonardo Dicaprio (who still makes us swoon) and Kate Winslet( who reminds us why Rose could actually let Jack freeze), it tells the story of two star-crossed lovers aboard the doomed ship. While there are plenty of moments worth mentioning (like when Jack draws Rose like one of his French girls), we all know what scene really got us – when Rose promises to always hold on even as Jack sinks into freezing water.

At its core, Titanic represents true love; something so powerful that even death cannot sever its ties (unlike those cheap stockings Rose used to snag sofas because girl couldn’t keep her legs together while playin hide n seek below decks).

And whether or not you believe in happily ever afters or everlasting soulmates might depend on how much wine you’ve had but we can all get behind sentiments like “never letting go”.

The Decision

So when I started thinking about getting another tattoo (afterall theres only so much blank space you can leave till you run out of space to show it off), I knew that the ‘I’ll never let go’ quote was the perfect fit. Not only did it represent something special to me (like how much i love the ocean, even though I can’t swim for shit) but it also looked pretty damn cool.

Now some may argue that getting a tattoo of something from pop culture is just cliche ( well newsflash suzy homemaker, we all have different interests and passions so don’t try to judge my choices based on YOUR idea of originality )but for me, Titanic was more than just a movie – it was an experience (considering i bawled like a baby at least three times while watching).

Plus, with so many memorable quotes in its script means I could always get another one if this one turned out looking like chicken scratch or if someone decided to sue everyone claiming they’re the real life “Jack” in Titanic saga

The Day Of

Naturally, when I finally found myself staring down at my new tattoo design (which sneaked up behind doing laundry list of mundane things and impulse-bought itself into existence) , there were plenty of worries swirling around in my mind:

  • What if he spells “…never let go” wrong?
  • How badly is this going to hurt?
  • Is there such thing as too many tequila shots before being held semi-captive by tiny pen-like machines?

Despite all these reasons – which ranged from valid concerns about personal safety management and alcohol consumption levels (not exaggerating when i say no adernaline assisted ink would bring up spelling accuracy level unlike your mother tongue language muscle memory abilities.)–something inside me kept saying: “This is what you want; you know that.”

So with shaking hands(and no hand wringing surprise here please over-makaiving distress festival anyone?), I sat down on the edge of that tattoo bench, took a deep breath, and prepared to see my newest obsession turned into a permanent fixture.

The Result

At that moment – as the needle pierced my skin for the first time (insert various cursewords under your breath here)– I knew that this was the best decision I had ever made. As it turns out, getting inked is like having a pain party where you get judged silently by strangers(the jury composed of those who sufferred most) in your own private theatre.

Everyone seems to want one these days but trust me: not all tattoos are created equal (Take everyone’s favorite “Tramp stamp” for example.. how did guys think they were slick by making this term up?).

Some may say that their tattoo has no meaning – just some butterfly or tribal art they picked off a wall. But mine? This tattoo will always represent something special (like onesies with buttons down the middle)

It reminds me of true love and how far someone must go(/how much somebody would endure)to keep their promises. Sure, maybe ‘Titanic’ isn’t exactly Merchant Ivory material and definitely does NOT resembe CHER’s filmography winks ,but there’s no denying its power to make us feel something real (deep enough for men standing outside changing room waiting patiently during black Friday sale hours).

Whether or not it actually has anything to do with DiCaprio in his youth (a mystery we shall ponder forevermore), this tattoo serves as both a tribute to an unforgettable movie, pain threshold abilities revisited each time(much like doing burpees daily)and also recognition of our duty fulfill what attracts us at any given point irrespective of later consequences( yea including bad exes ;)).

So if you’re considering getting some new ink yourself – whether inspired by pop culture classics such as Titanic or otherwise – remember that it’s ultimately up to you. Only make lemonade if that’s what you’re into, but be sure it represents something important (unlike children’s books whose only take away is not consuming unknown substances from questionable old men visiting your gardens).
