    How much Lactulose is safe to take? The usual adult dosage is 10 g to 20 g of lactulose daily. The dose may be increased to 40 g daily if necessary. Twenty-four to 48 hours may be required to produce a normal bowel movement.

    Can you take lactulose long term? Lactulose is used to treat chronic constipation and can be taken safely for long periods of time. Given that your husband is always constipated I would think your doctor is intending him to take it long term. Check with your doctor at your next visit.

    Is lactulose a stimulant laxative? Lactulose is a synthetic laxative derived from lactose that causes water to go into the colon, effectively softening stools. Lactulose can increase the frequency and number of bowel movements in chronically constipated individuals.
