How to treat clogged ear at home?
Having clogged ears can be a pain in the, well…ear! It’s uncomfortable and can interfere with our hearing. Luckily, there are several ways to treat clogged ears at home that don’t require a doctor or hours of waiting in line.
Whether you’ve got earwax buildup or a blocked Eustachian tube from flying, I’ve got you covered with some simple and effective tips for unclogging your ears. So sit back, relax (not too much though), grab your cotton swabs and let’s get started!
Hot Tip #1 – Use Salt Water
Are you feeling salty? Good because we’re about to use salt water to unblock that gunked-up ear of yours. The salt helps absorb moisture while also killing off bacteria on the surface of your skin (because nobody likes having bacterial parties inside their ear).
Here’s how:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of salt into ½ cup of warm water.
- Dip a cotton ball into the solution.
- Tilt your head upwards so that the affected ear is facing up.
- Squeeze a few drops of the solution into your ear using an eyedropper (or have someone else do it for you while praying they don’t pour all over).
- Let it sit for 3 – 5 minutes before tilting your head downwards over a sink to flush out any excess fluid.
You should feel immediate relief and hear better as soon as this blockage-buster mixture begins its work magic 😄
Pro tip: You could add baking soda instead of salt if there concerns about sensitivity
Hot Tip #2 – Steamy Sessions Are Your Friend
There aren’t too many people who don’t appreciate steamy sessions 😉 When it comes to treating clogged ears though, steaming is seriously beneficial! This process allows hot, moist air to work its way into your ear canal, loosening up any trapped fluid or gunk.
Ready to get steamy?
- Boil water in a pot.
- Transfer the boiling water carefully from the stove to
your heat-resistant bowl placed onto a towel on a table (safety first folks). - Lean over with your head roughly 12 inches away from the bowl and cover it as well as your head using a clean towel
Pro tip: Don’t be sick of steaming too soon. Five-minute intervals would do but repeating multiple times for max benefits
Hot Tip #3 – Eustachian Tube Massage
This one might sound odd at first…but sometimes you need give yourself (or get someone else) an ear-rub! Not just like any other rub though; specifically an Eustachian tube massage!
The Eustachian tube connects each middle ear directly to the back of your throat and when it becomes blocked, pressure builds causing discomfort.
Here’s how:
- Find that little bump by stretching diagonally behind her earlobe.
- Use two fingers (pointer and middle fingers preferred)to apply firm downward pressure
- During this time, don’t stop swallowing because once again we’re opening those tubes right back up!
- Now relieve these sore muscles slightly before beginning another round of massages.
Hot Tip #4 – All-Natural Oil Drops
Natural oils have been gaining traction in unclogging ears for some time now…and for good reason! These oils serve as great antibacterial agents(without burning off anything), break down blockages within our ears while also moisturizing our skin naturally(bye bye dryness).
Here are three natural oils perfect for battling clogged ears;
1.Coconut oil (a versatile INGREDIENT which can normally help alleviate inflammation)
2.Olive oil (makes his way to fatty ear waxes and melts them away)
- Garlic oil (most effective of the trio, more on that later though…)
To use your oil:
- Warm some oil in a bowl or cup of hot water, for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Tilt your head so that the affected ear is facing up then administer two drops into one ear with a dropper
- Leave it there until blockages have cleared.
Pro tip: Make sure your oil has cooled down enough before dropping those bad boys into your ears.
Hot Tip #5 – Show Some Love With Garlic Oil Drops
Garlic? Really? I know this may sound odd but trust me, garlic deserves its own special section here because it’s such an effective remedy when it comes to treating clogged ears. It’s packed with antibiotic properties so you’re likely going to kill two birds (or bacteria) with one stone! 🦷 🔨🦬
Here’s how:
- Take around three cloves worth of minced garlic and mix it thoroughly (don’t skimp because he seems strong).
- Add about four tablespoons of sesame or olive oil to make approximately thirty little drops each
- Let drop carefully(not too fast!) about two drops in both ears every day until clear.
Warning: If any sort
of irritation occurs while applying these regular intervals try using some other method or consult specialist.
Have fun unclogging!
