How to treat an open blister?

Blisters – a friend of the great outdoors but often the worst enemy when you’re trying to break in a new pair of shoes or fancy yourself a runner. Not only can they be painful, but they are also unsightly and can even lead to more serious complications if left untreated. Fear not though, we have some juicy tips on how to treat open blisters that will have your feet back in tip-top shape in no time.

Assessing the Situation

The first step is identifying what type of blister it is because all blisters should be treated differently depending on their severity:

Hemorrhagic Blisters

If your blister appears black and blue, this means that blood has filled up under the skin and is definitely worthy of being put up for auction. Pop goes hematomas!

Friction Blisters

These are small fluid-filled pockets that typically form around friction areas like between toes while wearing flip flops purchased from clearance racks at TJ Maxx.

Burn Blisters

Fire Ants bites/pizza burns etc…Which usually manifests itself with little swellings filled with inflammatory pus.

To Pop or Not Pop?

POP POP

This would largely depend on what kind of blister you’ve got sitting pretty on your foot-shelve. We know it’s quite tempting to pop any sizeable blister as soon as possible; however, popping doesn’t work well for every one of them.

Don’t Pop Hemorrhagic Blisters (Please)

Resist! Your urge! These types usually go down by themselves after some time so let mother nature take its course- she knows her stuff!

When It Does Burst However…

If by freak accident we have managed rupture our beloved hemorrhages well beyond recognition , simply apply pressure using clean gauze until bleeding stops then smoothly proceed through “tough-luck” attitudes.

Popping Friction Blisters

This may offer immediate relief in cases of extreme pain (Jokes on them tho’ ’cause they surely will be worse). To go about this,
– sanitize the skin and needle by using rubbing alcohol placed into a small sterilized area.
– Use the needle to puncture gently at the bottom part of the blister
be sure to leave its “outer layers” still intact as possible.

After Popping…

Immediately disinfect it with some hydrogen peroxide or another reliable antiseptic- who knows what lives out there!

Cleaning Up Your Blister

It’s important you know how to take care of your blisters after all your hard work popping/staying classy; here are steps:

Removing Debris/ Checking for Dirt & Grime

Ensure perforations or torn tissue remains inside but closely remove any debris nestling In outer layering then simply clean it up with saline water… OR if you have none laying around use one teaspoonful-thymol crystals thoroughly dissolved within Eight ounces-hot distilled water.

Topical Vitamin E and Sunscreen!

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that encourages wound healing (“Encourages” being tried-and-true marketing mumbo jumbo) – apply a few drops of this goody-pigment before covering with adhesive plaster! Just like you’d smear sunscreen vigorously onto exposed areas when going out: sun damage should not result from having band-aids over a blistered foot either. If stinging questions arise try applying Nivea Creme immediately afterwards – trust me I’ve heard it helps.

Cover It Up Now – Don’t Let ’im See How You Feel

Once cleaned, we would recommend loosely covering the top with gauze raised from second-degree tears (fake tears because injuries aren’t crying until infected amirite?). There are many products such as moleskin, adhesive plaster etc. out there to choose from.

Refrain From Using Duct Tape for a Moment

However, I bet you’re already considering some other creative ideas we’ve seen/heard around like – Myteriously lost your opus. DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE! It’s not that kind of party guys!

Here is why:

  • Heat buildup
  • Skin irritation
    or worse…. wait for it…
you guessed it… duct tape residue…

Just don’t do it – to avoid infection and delays in the healing process get yourself the right product that has heel guards stamped all over them: no delay necessary (Psst..This usually comes available as Newskin liquid/waterproof foam pads or hydrocolloids ).

And Loosen Up!

A little air flow won’t kill us now Would It? This would mean removing our Jimmy Choos hopefully at home during bedtime; this way aired out feet can also appear like they quietly enjoyed beach scenes.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Now our poor readers are well informed let’s focus on prevention tactics such as:

Protective Equipment Against Friction-Based Blisters

Frictions tend to be formed mostly between toes so wearing toe socks could contribute if done adequately (choose quality). In addition Buying shoes half size larger is helpful too.

Let’s wrap things up with….

Our Final Words…

Blisters are just mere reminders that humans have mortal blood streaming through veins but also opportunities to learn about ourselves , particularly in how we treat injuries.
Remember these tips when next you find yourself feeling under-one’s-blister:
– Assess what type of blister first
– Popping may offer relief but not always!
– Do your best cleaning it out afterwards and disinfecting
ahh and yes PLEASE use vitamin E/topical treatment followed by a loose cover
We hope these guidelines would serve as “heel”ps;)…Cough Cough really? Ok, never mind then shrugs.
