How to tell if u fractured your ankle?

If you’re feeling like your ankle has more cracks than an egg dropped from the roof of a skyscraper, it’s possible that you may have fractured your ankle. But how can you really know? Don’t worry, I’m here to help. With these tips, tricks, and hints scattered throughout this article, you’ll be able to tell for yourself whether or not letting an emu dance on your foot was worth it.

A Little Bit About Ankles

First off: let’s talk about what ankles are and why they sometimes break. For all intents and purposes (don’t lie – even with broken bones you still try), we will refer to the ends of our leg tentacles as ‘ankles.’ Ankles are made up of three different types of bone: the tibia, fibula, and talus. These special little guys help us walk around, run away from awkward situations at parties, kick things when angry…you get the point.

Now when any one (or multiple) pieces of these bones snap in two like a stick getting caught in a car tire…well then friendo, we’ve got ourselves a fracture!

Signs That Your Ankle May Be Broken

So now that we know what makes up ankles (besides hopes and dreams), how can we tell if they’ve been shattered into tiny fragments?

Swelling Beyond Belief

Were elephants chasing after some peanuts – but instead found themselves playing soccer with only their trunks? That sounds quite unusual! The same goes for extremely swollen areas around your ankle(s). If there is some serious expansion occurring beyond normal capacity even though no elephant stampede came through last night (but really who knows anything anymore at this point?!) it could mean that something inside doesn’t quite fit hand-in-hand anymore.

Pain, Pain and More Pain

Differentiating between mild ankle sprains (those sneaky ankle kinks that you never quite know whether or not to take seriously) and an actual break can often rely on the amount of pain being felt. If your ankle is more painful than listening to someone talk with a mouthful of mashed potatoes about their sewing collection, then it’s possible that something has snapped.

Bruises Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Ankle fractures can typically come coupled with whole other slew of issues (oh boy!). For instance, if brutal bruises or ecchymosis are popping up all over like summertime cicadas emerging from underground…well my friend, maybe we should have worn more protective pads during our soccer game after all!

The Ankle Test No One Really Wants To Take But Sometimes Has To

Now we’ve made it to the physical exam portion – Fun stuff I promise ! Do note however , that doing this without adequate professional help could worsen injury !

Move It Around

Alright Dr. Frankenstein go forth and feel free to wiggle any remaining limb parts around in order get some sense as to which side -if there is one- has suffered from a sneaky little fracture . Many times you’ll have enough “feedback” so please do be careful when trying this out (but cross your fingers you won’t need further nursing care after) .

Having said all of these tidbits related even in passing at times , let’s still remember what we were originally discussing… which was signs indicative of fractures occurring within ankles (or lack thereof).

What Not To Do When Your Ankles Are Fractured… Or Potentially Fractured At That Matter

When dealing with anything regarding bodily harm — especially possibly broken limbs involved–there are certain precautions we must always keep in mind. Here’s some advice:

  1. Resist the urge to continue walking (we aren’t ibexes,so we must remind ourselves oh so bluntly of this)
  2. Avoid moving ankle making additional moves that could cause further damage ; these moments in time are worth avoiding if not completely necessary

Other preventative measures quite noticeable due to their large degree of importance include :

  1. Keep inflammation at bay with ice or cold compresses, as a first-aid solution
  2. Elevate fractured area slightly above heart level , whenever resting is what one’s doing
  3. Get medical attention immediately for peace mind and accurate diagnosis

Remember! A couple days removed from the agony/frustration/annoyance from having a fractured ankle right now will seem like nothing compared to how great it’ll be once you can move around again . Everything WILL get better well before you know it !
