How to take care of body during periods?

Congratulations, you’re officially a woman! Ok, no need to curse me yet. I just mean that your periods have started and let’s face it; it comes with a lot of perks like mood swings, cramps, bloating and sometimes unaccountable tears. Let’s not forget the embarrassing moments when you can’t find a tampon or pad in your bag or those ‘red’ stains on your clothes which are always right before an important meeting.

Well fret not my dear little sister from another mister (or brother if he is reading this), we’ve got some tips to save yourself from all these troublemakers during ‘that time of the month’. (wink wink)

1) Invest in Quality Sanitary Products:

Nowadays there are so many menstrual products available for us ladies out there- pads with wings, tampons (with applicators), menstrual cups etc. The first step towards taking care of your body during periods should be choosing quality sanitary products that suit your flow and comfort level.

Also remember never ever compromise hygiene while choosing sanitary protection. It can lead to infections which could cause more harm than good!

2) Stay Hydrated:

Water is essential for life; hydration is absolutely critical especially during periods because water helps fight bloating as well as ease cramps.

Add lemon juice (a natural diuretic) into water and drink up! Do keep track of how much caffeine you intake though as too much caffeine can make one dehydrated.

Here’s a small tip: Avoid fizzy drinks(Bubbly pops). They may provide quick relief but might worsen the period symptoms by increasing bloating

3) Nadya’s Superfood Time:

OK #HealthSquad, Here’s what all Indian households swear by – Jaggery has been used for centuries to combat cramps and mood swings during periods and it actually works thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Another food fave of the menstrual cycle is Magnesium, found in spinach (that’s right popeye), nuts, seeds (like flaxseed) can help relax muscles, aid digestion and decrease irritability.

Don’t forget Vitamin C which helps the body absorb iron from foods like leafy greens and protein-rich sources including chicken, lentils, etc. (We’re looking at you Malaysians with your Nasi Lemak)

4) No Underwire Bras Please! :

An important point that we rarely talk about but ladies please ditch those underwired bras during period week. The underwires can put unnecessary pressure on breasts making them more sensitive (as if they aren’t already!) . Opting for a soft bra or even sports bra would be advisable.

5) Exercise:

If you feel lethargic or suffer from cramps then light exercise such as stretching/yoga could do wonders for your body by increasing blood circulation thereby easing menstrual pains; additionally avoid heavy workouts until these pains subside.

Here’s another factoid: Premenstrual stress syndrome increases one’s tendency to consume junk food so sweat it out ladies!

6) Additional Cloth Pads – Why not?

Periods are unpredictable at times so having a cloth pad nearby won’t hurt anybody. It also does saving with respect to money since cloth pads last long compared to disposable counterpart plus less waste produced too

Remember always carry an extra Pad because what happens when someone else needs one? That’ll earn you some Karma points I promise

7) Catch Some Zzzz’s:

Okay Chicas By now y’all must have heard how important sleep is but did you ever realise how vital it is especially during menstruation?

Lack of Sleep /not getting enough sleep leads to a drop in energy levels which affects mood inducing a gloomy feeling (Nobody wants that). Hence make sure you get 7-8 hours of sound sleep, it will work wonders for your body and mind.

8) Check Your Iron Intake :

Periods can lead to iron deficiencies which is why there may be tiredness and lack of energy. It’s important to consume iron-rich foods like dark leafy vegetables (spinach /bok choy/tomatoes ), eggs etc., this helps keep energy levels up!

Add some Vitamin C into diet such as bite-sized oranges or papayas just before meals to absorb maximum iron from food — Voila!!

Still worried about dietary intake? Here’s where consulting with doctors or nutritionists comes in handy because what works for someone else might not always benefit you!

9) Don’t Take Stress:

Another Problem faced by almost all women during periods is an Increase in anxiety and irritability.

One tip would be indulging small activities that distract the mind from menstrual troubles-Try gardening or listening music whenever stressful thoughts arise. Another option could be writing down your thoughts on paper so don’t bottle them up

(A word of caution: Going beyond these simple tricks speak with a counselor/therapist who will help manage mental health concerns.)

10)Sexual Health Education:

Psssst…. try exploring yourself more than anything!!

Education really matters when it comes to taking care of oneself. Studies have shown female learners believe
Internet over PD sessions at school! Educating oneself regarding different aspects involving menstrual cycles; sexual health could prove advantageous especially since many myths persist regarding the same.

Take out time educate yourself ladies, after-all knowing is half the battle won!
