How to prevent fruit flies at home?

Fruit flies are the bane of every fruit lover’s existence. These tiny, pesky little bugs can start showing up out of nowhere and make a home in your kitchen if you’re not careful. Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can take to prevent fruit flies from taking over your home.

Keep Your Kitchen Clean

The first step in preventing fruit flies is to keep your kitchen clean. Fruit flies love nothing more than ripe or decaying fruits and vegetables. To avoid attracting them into your kitchen, make sure to clean all dishes thoroughly after eating and remove any food debris that has dropped on the floor (or was thrown there by your clumsy cat).

Remove Ripe or Decaying Produce

Additionally, it’s necessary to inspect all produce for signs of rotting or age daily (before they go from smelling like fresh apples to fermented pies). Even one piece that’s past its prime could attract a swarm of fruit flies within hours!

If you have an abundance of fruits lying around frequently but rarely ripen synchronously such as bananas; consider suspending unripe pieces on hooks instead of placing them together with already ripe ones (fruit Medusa doesn’t get anyone anywhere).

Store Fruits Properly

Storing fruits properly right from purchase is another efficient way(s) (because here ‘two’ isn’t necessarily better than one) for keeping those annoying insects away! Here are some tips:

  1. Keep separate items apart- different fruits should be stored differently according their respective ethylene-hormone production capacity (ethylene being mainly responsible for ripening).

2.Use cloth bags (not plastic) because plastics trap moisture that encourages humidity which cultivates bacteria growth.

3.Store dry/cleaned washed-out foods alone while wet/raw/unwashed ones rack-up on mesh counters free circulating air spaces allow quick evaporation of moisture.

Utilize Traps

Trapping fruit files might seem like an old school method, but if done correctly, it can be incredibly effective. You may have seen the classic apple cider vinegar trap before, where a small container filled with ACV and soap attracts flies and drowns them. (bye bye Mr irritating) Another option is wine traps which require placing beer bottles or other similar containers around your kitchen fill about half full with inexpensive red/white wines which are potent scent attractants; cover the opening tightly using saran wraps exposing holes around rim-seal for entry (FYI: The trapped murder scene smells vile.)

You could as well get some fly paper cost-efficiently in shops close by that keep pest prevention essentials handy . All you got to do is place the hanging rolls low-key on corners of walls/windows (though they don’t look so professional).

Close Your Doors and Windows

Although we love letting fresh air into our homes during cool weather or even hot summer nights (potential zika-mosquitoes enthusiasts), open windows come along with their little guests -fruit flies included! Keeping doors/entryways closed will reduce the number of flying insects settling inside.

Clean Your Garbage Disposal Regularly

Your garbage disposal unit can become a breeding plant for home bugs over time due to its convenience for food debris (which drives fruit flies wild) becoming stagnant within it. One strategy to avoid these problems would be scheduling regular disinfecting sessions weekly or bi-monthly(depending on how much waste goes through) involving pouring down baking soda, lemon peels & vinegar down followed by cold water flush!

There’s no need to let unsanitary conditions lead into infestation areas when there’s ample room for corrective measures!
