How to prep a mango to eat?

As summer approaches, it’s time to start thinking about those sweet, juicy mangoes that are just waiting to be devoured. But let’s face it – some of us have no idea how to approach these exotic fruits without making a sticky mess. Fear not! Whether you’re an experienced foodie or just trying out something new, this guide will show you all the tricks and techniques you need for perfectly prepping a mango in style.

Getting Started: Picking the Perfect Mango

Before we can dive into the prep process itself, we need to make sure our choice of fruit is up-to-par -or should I say “up-to-mango?” Here are some tips on selecting the perfect specimen:

Look for Color and Texture

A ripe mango will usually be mostly golden-yellow with some green shading towards its stem side. Additionally, its skin should give slightly when gently pinched-but don’t go squeezing it like your Aunt Hilda would do.

Go by Smell

Unlike apples or oranges where scent doesnt really matter much – Mangoes usually emit an enticing aroma when they’re fully ripe. Hint: If it smells tangy-sweet instead of sour-ish , You’ve got yourself a keeper.

Check Firmness

Touching might not always provide reliable results as sometimes firm unripened mangos aren’t visibly different from their delightful counterparts however if ur Lordship King Arthur were here he’d use his amazing strength and firmly squeeze every last mango within sight until one gave way(can someone please get me an ice pack)…. so alternatively Ask your grocer or supplier when their latest batch arrived because ripeness levels vary between deliveries

Once you’ve made your pick (sans bruises ideally), now comes my favourite part …

The Prep Process: Let’s Get Slicing

The mango peeling process can feel daunting at first but with the proper technique and knife, it can be as easy as slicing a cucumber okay maybe not that easy. We’ll go over two main methods to prepare your fruit: the Standing Mango method™ and the ever so simple Mango-on-a-Plate Method.

Option #1 – The Standing Mango MethodTM

If you want those nice uniformed cubes or if you’re trying to show off fancy prep skills ,then this is an option for you.

What You’ll Need

  • A ripe mango obviously
  • A sharp knife (and steady hands)
    OR
  • One of those cool multi-blade mango slicers (not required)

Instructions

(1) Stand up the mango on its narrow end and identify which way runs along both sides of the pretty flat pit(this is where a sharp knives becomes essential).
(2) Cut away from its center line on one side ,then do repeat using position angle… keeping in mind repeated slices should have similar thickness else they’ll look ugly. Remember we eat with our eyes too
Or
(3) Use a designated gadget/multi-bladed slicer, by gently guiding grooved edges alongside towards flesh

Whichever path you choose, now comes the critical point – wedging out those delicious cubes.

Getting To Those Tasty Chunks

To remove these fruity bitesize bits:

(a) Hold onto skin edge firmly between fingers/servers.
(b) Cut down with precision until reaching outer layer/peel’s boundary without piercing inner skin.
(c ) Turn peach half upside-down then slice downwards in short intervals (dependant on how large I want my pieces)
(d ) Finally carve along peel & pop chunks into your favourite serving plate

Voila! You’ve created mini-cubes of sweetness perfect for snacking or mixing into salads.-it’s like getting the best of both worlds!

Option #2 – Mango-On-A-Plate Method

For anyone just trying to get their snack on and not worried about perfecting fruit presentation ,then this method is definitely for you!

What You’ll Need

  • A ripe mango (no rocket science there).
  • One flat plate(that’s it!)

Instructions

(1.) On a table, place the ripened mango with its big side facing skyward
(2) Make two long cuts alongside that hard pit in the middle but dont go too deep as your intention is only to slice off those two halves.
(if need be recall patience which im sure someone must’ve gifted you at some point)

The battle has officially begun: skin vs knife! Cue intense music.

(3) Place one half down onto plate then utilizing knife score its length, snaking around traces peel sides or borders(mindfully avoiding cutting deeply).
(4) Repeat chopping other parts depositing chunks adjacent shared platter before serving fresh !

Sometimes simplicity wins over showmanship; you know what they say ‘beauty lies in the eyes of beholder’ or was it belly? Either way we’re happy because we now have chunky wedges prepped in seconds allowing us more time for napping.
