Why invest in a pumping bra?

Pumping bras are designed to hold the flanges securely against each breast while freeing up both hands, allowing moms to multitask during their pumping sessions. They also reduce strain on arms and back, which can be especially beneficial if mom needs to pump frequently or has an overly heavy milk supply.

If purchasing an expensive brand-name option isn’t feasible for you at this time or simply doesn’t fit into your budget, don’t worry! It’s easy enough to make one right at home without expert sewing skills, using items like sports bras and more. Here’s how:

Option 1: Convert Your Sports Bra

Got an old but still supportive sports bra lying around? Great! Follow these simple steps:

Materials needed:

  • Sports bra
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Two hair ties (the thicker ones work best)

Steps:

  1. Put on the sports bra over any nursing pads or regular clothes.
  2. Use the marker to mark two small dots where each nipple is located.
  3. Take off the sports bra and lay flat.
  4. Cut two small slits in each marked spot on either side of each middle seam about 1inch apart.
  5. Backside-up turnover so that middle seams meet though yet aren’t overlapping upside down 180 degrees till there is now only space from area just gained under what was top lip part of bra cups to bottom of what was band now will be halving cup, with seams running through inner sides/underside of improvised cup shape. This step might look confusing but give it enough time!
  6. Criss-cross the hair ties over each breast (making sure both are roughly at nipple-level) by putting one loop over each slit then stretching them across diagonally and sticking into opposite slits.
  7. Flip the sports bra forward and smooth out any bunching or folding of fabric.
  8. Put on a pair of flanges connected to your breast pump, this is where you may need help from someone like a partner so they can hold in place for you while connecting, affix whatever parts needed before starting up suction speed and wait until milk flows! Now just sit back or walk around doing as many errands as desired knowing your flanges are securely held against your breasts.

Option 2: From Scratch

If don’t have an old sports bra lying about already or would rather start completely fresh here’s how:

Materials needed:

  • Stretchy jersey-knit fabric
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Sewing machine OR needle & thread

Steps:

1.Find material to make proper-sized tube top that stays snug without being uncomfortably tight which stretches easily in all directions either according bust outlay size/shirt size chart online confirms measurements yourself prior buying ensuring stretchy elastic trim sewn inside rib-cage perimeter hemline tugged down underneath bust-line fabric won’t ride-up during movement around day-to-day activities since back hook closure is not necessary.
2.Put it on over nursing pads if using however still possible put directly onto skin/use standard nursing bra undergarment between body camera layer fabric /what requires clipping place cotton-based pad(s).
3.Identify points near center mass because those match placement point both pump flanges should go situated nipples making certain marker lines best visibility in order slit beneath fabric material allows pump funnels having access breasts so milk flows through tubing into container that system you have on had.
4. Finally, after cutting a small hole from the marked spot to insert each breast shield flange before securing them as comfortably close together over nipples.

Pro tip: If using a sewing machine, make sure to pick out elastic thread (one that winds like ribbon) which stretches when garment is pushed against during movement instead of standard thread best for easily making an adjustable pumping bra stretchable.

Adjusting The Fit

With both of these options described above, don’t worry if it takes time to get everything properly configured around your body shape – this should end up being trial and error kind of work trying different size pads or adjusting straps if required tweaking with number hair ties/string band adjustments until perfect! Once comfortable enough feel free try additional modifications idea on original inspiration foam inserts better lift/control without hurting back more while offer additional cover privacy need occurs less displayed under clothing due smaller form factor than traditional bras too bulky especially shirts fitting slimly.
