How to make ribbons to wear?

Are you tired of wearing the same boring clothes every day? Do you want to add some pizzazz to your outfits without breaking the bank? Well, have no fear! Making your own ribbons is a simple and affordable way to spruce up any piece of clothing. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also feel like a DIY queen (or king). So grab your scissors and let’s get started!

Materials Needed

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty details of ribbon-making, let’s make sure we have all the necessary materials:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Iron
  • Ribbon clamps
  • Jump rings
  • Lobster clasps

If you’re feeling adventurous and want a certain pattern on your ribbon, consider buying fabric with designs already printed on them. This can add an extra level of creativity and uniqueness.

Step One: Measuring and Cutting

The first step in creating any ribbon is measuring out how long it should be. For wristbands or chokers, 8 inches should suffice; for belts or headbands, anywhere from 30 inches to 60 inches will work.

Once you have measured out your desired length with either a ruler or tape measure, take your trusty pair of scissors (cue dramatic music) and cut along the measurement mark.

Step Two: The Hemming Process

Now that our fabric has been trimmed down to size (like my split ends after a haircut), it’s time for hemming—aka making sure those edges don’t fray beyond repair (literally fraying at the seams! Can’t relate) While using an iron isn’t mandatory for this step, it will help create crisp folds later on.

First off, fold over one end by about half an inch, smoothing it out with your fingers so that the crease remains, then iron it into place. Repeat for the other end of the ribbon.

Step Three: Ironing Again

I know, I know, this is about as repetitive as listening to “Baby Shark” on loop (doo doo doo), but hear me out! Ironing over these folds will help keep them clean and neat, making attaching clamps a breeze in later steps.

Take your time to ensure that no wrinkles are left behind; you don’t want folding complications down the road!

Step Four: Clamping Time

Hooray! We’re finally ready to start attaching our lobster clasps and jump rings—and yes, we really said lobster clasp (you read that right!)

First off, open up one side of a ribbon clamp by gently squeezing it between two pliers (just like dealing with toddlers). Ensure an equal amount of fabric is placed within each half of the clamp before giving both sides a firm squeeze together again.

Repeat this task for both ends of your ribbon until you have successfully attached all those lovely lobster clasps and jump rings. Be sure they are secured tightly enough not to fall off!

If done correctly, VIOLA! You now have made yourself some snazzy custom ribbons ready for wear!

Tips For Success

As always, no project comes without obstacles (like my cat deciding she wants her own DIY bed across my workspace) To avoid any bumps along the way journey, here’s few helpful tips:

  • Use sharp scissors when cutting your fabric
  • Take extra care when hemming so not many loose strings hang from edges
  • Don’t forget to flip fabrics after hemming!
  • Keep an eye on measurements throughout every step(spoiler alert!)
  • Be experimental, even try different-sized ribbons or vary patterns

And there you have it, ladies and gents! Don’t be afraid to go all out on this project. Making clothes that are both unique and wallet friendly is the perfect way to express your humor/sparkle/tartness! This could put a fun twist for any craft fair or even garage sale event (that’s what weekends are for, am I right?!)
