How to make absinthe with wormwood?

Absinthe, often referred to as the Green Fairy, is a highly alcoholic spirit that originated in Switzerland in the late 18th century. It was banned for many years due to its supposed psychoactive effects, but it has since regained popularity among cocktail enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Building off our last article on ‘making moonshine’, we’d like to dive into how absinthe can be made – this time with wormwood.

What is Absinthe?

Absinthe is a spirit that’s distilled from botanicals including anise, fennel and wormwood. It’s known for its green hue but also comes in other colors such as clear or pink after distillation process. It usually clocks-in at around 45-74% alcohol by volume (or proof), which means sipping too much of it might induce hallucinations, although there are no scientific study backing that claim so far!

Wormwood

The ingredient of wormwood gives absinth(e) the extra kick compared to similarly flavored liquors such as pastis. As much as wormwood contributes heavily into giving unique flavor and aroma associated with Absint(h)e production; ingesting large quantities of Thujone, the active volatile oil compound found in so-called “grand-wormwoods”,can cause seizures. When extracting thujoness during distilling process,it’s important not overdo otherwise you may have end up injuring yourself. The trick here lies when preparing the mixture, dosage must be closely monitored before being incorporated into your drinkable solution. Most recipes generally go between more than handful,to couple ounces depending upon your preferred intensity!

The Equipment You Need

Before embarking on creating these mysterious potions..(Uhh I mean Absinthes!) let’s get you equipped, you’ll need some important items:

1). Distiller: If you’ve used a distiller for other things like making gin or whiskey, you’ll already know just how useful they can be when it comes to creating your own absinthe. They come in different sizes, materials and price points with few options catering ginaormous 25 gallons+ ways so that all levels just-in of alcohol enthusiasts may reap the full benefits their product output.

2). Wormwood: as mentioned earlier, the magic ingredient of Absinths. You wanna make sure you stock up on some ‘grand-wormwood’. As it isn’t an uncommon herb,it shouldn’t be hard to procure from a local pharmaceutical store or botanical specialist near you!

3). Anise seed and fennel seed: these two spices together play an equally essential part as wormwood during production process. They are readily available at any grocery stores nearby.

4). Sugar cubes or Granulated sugar whichever floats your boat- adding sweetness balances out bitter flavors inherent in many types of liqueurs. It’s really down to future having-custome’rs preference, however theres large group fans who swear granules crystals mixed along honey does the ultimate job!

The most lauded ratio at this point;100gms-200gms of each.Wipe bottle-clean on outer surfaces before sealing tightly either using cork stoppers-better still if waxed-sealed caps available which will protect its mixture from far off wafting of jar’d aroma.

Step Two
