How to know if blood sugar is high?

Are you feeling tired, thirsty and hungry all the time? Do you have blurry vision or are prone to infections? Have you recently developed a sweet tooth that could rival Willy Wonka’s candy factory? Well, my friend, it’s time to face the bitter truth – your blood sugar may be high. Don’t worry though; we’re here to help.

What is Blood Sugar?

Before we tell you how to know if your blood sugar is high, let’s first understand what blood sugar is. Scientifically speaking, blood sugar, also known as glucose, comes from the food we eat and provides energy for our cells. Our pancreas produces insulin which helps keep our blood sugar levels in check.

Why Should You Be Concerned About High Blood Sugar?

Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is important for overall health because fluctuating levels can lead to complications such as diabetes or even heart disease – scary stuff!

Now that we’ve established why monitoring your blood sugar level matters let’s look at some ways through which one can determine if their blood sugars are too high.

Listen To Your Body

As Dr Seuss said “You know yourself best,” trust us on this one! If your body feels different than usual and symptoms persist for more than a few days- see a doctor!

Here are some common signs of elevated blood sugars;

Increased Thirst

Is drinking water becoming an Olympic sport lately? If so then its high time (no pun intended) you monitor those BG (Blood Glucose) numbers like they’re stock market shares!

Frequent Urination

If there was ever a silver lining in having 2 am bathroom runs…I don’t think anyone has found it… In fact feeling that urge far more often than normal might serve as an early warning sign of increased BG levels.

Dry mouth and skin

When your body doesn’t produce enough saliva, it can cause dry mouth. Similarly, high blood sugar also impairs the functioning of sweat glands which might result in a parched looking skin tone- plus side you’ll always look camera-ready .. wait no that’s not what we meant..

Sweet Cravings

“It’s just one chocolate cake; I won’t eat for the rest of the day!” Famous last words from every sweet tooth with elevated BG – because when our sugars are high or fluctuating frequently, we will feel constantly hungry (even after eating) leading to excessive food cravings

Blurred Vision

I don’t think it comes as a surprise that diabetes is often correlated with blindness. Prolonged spikes in blood sugars (hyperglycemia) over time causes damage to small vessels carrying oxygen into our eyes causing blurry vision…well apart from thriving if living life through an Insta filter like Valencia all day!

Blood Tests Do Not Lie!

We may be preaching listen-to-your-body warnings, but sometimes doctors find ways to keep us honest! And this method involves tests & needles.. pretty please put down that pitchfork

Blood tests serve as an accurate assessment tool for checking current BG readings. Most common among them include:

  • Fasting Plasma Glucose Test: A test administered on an empty stomach serves as long-term measure checking glucose readings within past three months.

Hint: Try getting lab results before breakfast incase fasting transforms into feasting sooner than anticipated.

  • For those who cannot take hearty meals before morning meds or appointments

  • A1C Test : This shows how much sugar sticking onto red-blood cells ongoingly over past 2–3 months

Note that A1C test varies around <5% average being healthy 5%-6%, while having anything over 6.5% signals a need for medication intervention!

  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: This includes glucose measurements taken post-fasting, Then consuming sugary solutions followed by monitoring changes within the blood sugar levels.

To Sum It Up

Whether we look at subjective signs or objective measures such as lab tests, keeping BG levels in check is important for maintaining good health and avoiding any further complications later down the line.

But if you are noticing these symptoms:
• Vision blurred?
• More bathroom trips than usual? Or #SorrynotSorry Urges to drink all your milk before it goes bad ?!

Then taking necessary measures right away---like some physical activity after indulging into that chocolate cake-Hey! Little wins right there!--can help lower those figures giving us some peace of mind....and who knows maybe now we can finally come up with an Olympic event involving gulping liters upon liters of water but hey one step at a time !
