How to irrigate a catheter?

First off, let’s be real. If you’re reading this, it’s because you already have a catheter in place. And for that, my friend, I commend you. It takes guts to live with one of those bad boys hanging out of your nether regions like an extra appendage.

But fear not! The process of irrigating a catheter may seem daunting at first glance, but it’s really just another step in your daily routine. And who knows? Maybe after reading this guide, you’ll even come to enjoy it (just kidding).

What is Irrigation?

Before we jump into the how-tos, let’s clarify what we mean by irrigation. In medical terms (hold on tight) – irrigation refers to the act of flushing out or cleaning a body part using fluid.

In layman’s terms (phew) – irrigation means rinsing out your catheter with water or saline solution.

Okay then! Now that we’ve got that covered…

Why do You Need to Irrigate Your Catheter?

(Irrigations make life better!)

There are various reasons why someone might need to irrigate their catheter:

  • To remove clots or debris from the tubing
  • To prevent infection
  • To maintain adequate urine output

Basically – no matter the reason –irrigation helps keep everything running smoothly down there.

When Should You Irrigate Your Catheter?

(Timing is everything!)
The timing will depend on whether you have an indwelling Foley-type urinary catheter (one that stays in all the time) or an intermittent straight-type urinary catheter (typically used several times per day).

If it’s an indwelling Foley-type:

  • Twice a day if only minimal urine drainage has occurred within a 24-hour period
  • Every 4-6 hours if there is continuous urine drainage

If it’s an intermittent straight-type:

  • Before and after catheterization
  • Anytime you feel like things aren’t flowing as they should (Call out for help at the second sign of trouble!)

Now that we know when to irrigate, let’s get down to how it’s actually done.

(Sing Ho-to-jolly-kardin-morning-firth, Dingle-dangle-day) – Ignore this line I was just practicing my singing.

Let’s get started with our step-by-step guide:

  1. Wash your hands – (Good make sure; not too clean though) thoroughly with soap and water. This will prevent any unwanted germs or bacteria from making their way into your urinary tract.
  2. Position yourself comfortably – in a seated or lying position where you can easily access the catheter site.
  3. Gather supplies – including a sterile saline solution or water irrigation kit, gloves (if desired), drape or towel to cover up Mr/Mrs.Fuzzies while doing the job and a container close at hand)
  4. Open the package of sterile saline solution/water, following instructions on label/kit:
  5. Hold your syringe above the catheter port without touching anything else
  6. Slowly push plunger taking care not to force air bubbles into tubing
  7. Draw back on syringe gently and remove
  8. Reconnect all tubes/devices correctly, hinging tubing connectors so they slide together smoothly – check twice!
  9. And finally – Send those fluids in (Irrigation time!), carefully regulating pressure until fluid enters bladder then allow it drain out through tube.

Not-so-Serious Tips & Tricks Because Why Not?

(No harm in laughing a bit!)

Here are some additional tips and tricks to make the irrigation process even more enjoyable (or at least less miserable).
