Can a common cold be treated with a Z-pack? The common cold is self-limited, meaning it goes away on its own without treatment. What is a Z-pack? A Z-pack is a regimen of prescription antibiotics (azithromycin) used to treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics, including the Z-pack, do not treat viruses, which are the cause of most colds and even bronchitis.

Is it safe to take Z pack for strep throat? Despite this, the Z pack or azithromycin is usually not the first choice for treatment. Doctors often prescribe antibiotics such as amoxicillin or penicillin to treat strep throat. Where other medications fail, or a person is allergic to these antibiotics, doctors may recommend using azithromycin. This drug is effective at killing the bacteria.

What happens if you take a Z pack when you don’t need it? Inappropriate use of azithromycin contributes to bacterial resistance. By taking a Z-pack when it’s not necessary, you may be putting yourself at risk for other health problems. If you’re not prescribed a Z-pack, it’s because you likely have a viral infection.
