How to get rid of battery acid on car?

Have you ever seen that unsightly battery acid buildup around your car’s battery terminal? Fear not! Here are some easy steps to get rid of it and have your ride looking like new again.

Items You Will Need

  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A stiff-bristled brush (or an old toothbrush)

Step 1: Protect Yourself Before Wrecking Yourself

Put on rubber gloves before cleaning the area. Battery acid can be hazardous if it comes in contact with skin. This is especially important for those with sensitive skin.

If there is a risk of splashing, put safety glasses or goggles as well. Eye drops won’t help cure blindness caused by exposure to harsh chemicals.

Step 2: Clean The Area Around Your Car’s Battery Terminal

Make A Solution

Pour four tablespoons of baking soda into a cup and slowly mix in warm water until the solution becomes a uniform paste-like consistency.
Use this liquid mixture sparingly, overusing it may lead to unwanted chemical reactions on the area treated.

Scrub Scrub Scrub!

Dip the tip od a suitable brush / toothbrush in your previously made solution then gently scrub around and atop each terminal, making sure all cracks and crevices get due attention

It should foam up from reaction between bicarbonate ions provided by NaHCO3 and acid present on terminals, leave for about five minutes until fizzing stops

Remember this – “gentle” is key here – You do not want any more damage than what has already been done.

Rinse Away All Acidity

Next step requires spraying copious amounts of water onto both positive & negative cables connected at both ends ,this would rinse off any remaining chemical residue

Once completely cleansed, wipe them down with a clean cloth and allow to dry

Step 4: Prevention is better than cure

To prevent battery corrosion and acid buildup in the future, remember these:

  • Apply lithium or silicone grease on terminals after cleaning

You’re set! Your car’s battery terminal should now be free from any nasty residue. Thanks for reading, folks!

Battery acid buildup refers to crusty white-greyish deposit caused by leakage of sulfuric acid from an overcharged lead-acid battery
