First things first, let’s figure out what the heck is really going on with your knee situation. If your legs look like two flamingos trying to mate every time you take a step, chances are good that you have knocked knees. But don’t worry (or do—this is serious stuff)! There’s hope yet.

What Are Knocked Knees?

Knocked knees occur when your shinbones come together at an angle narrower than normal while your thigh bones flare outward ^(like butt-flared jeans from the 90s). This can put strain on the medial collateral ligament (MCL) which connects the thighbone and shank bone.

What You Can Do About It

Stretch them bad boys! Try these stretches below:

  • Seated forward bend
  • Figure four stretch
  • Quad stretch
  • Half-pigeon pose

It may also be helpful to see a physiotherapist or orthopedic professional if pain persists.

Bow-legs happen when there’s an inward curve at the lower leg along with an outward curve of the thigh bone so^(it really seems like someone was putting Legos together wrong in utero). Overtime bowing of lower limb can lead causes osteoarthritis as well as varus deformity or hip disability.

What to Do About It

If you’re experiencing knee pain or discomfort as a result of bad alignment, there are things you can do on a daily basis to help them feel—well less crap.

Make Smart Footwear Choices

Your body will thank you for picking shoes with proper arch support! This helps maintain neutral ankle stabilityand reduces medial rotation torque which may provoke knock-kneed posture. So no moreflip flops at work^(not that anyone should have ever done this in the first place).

Sit up Straight(er)

Good posture is key to aligning those knocked knees back together again (or straightening those bow legs). Make sure that when sitting down (at home, work or even in transit) ___no slouching___._

Excess weight puts pressure on your joints – especially around your hips and knees. Losing some extra pounds can take added stress off your lower limbs which can be immensely helpful not just for trying fix wonky knee issues but in other ways too![2]
