How to administer breathing treatment?

Ahoy there, fellow friends in the medical community! I am Mr. Puddles, your resident funnyman clown and respiratory therapist extraordinaire. Today, we’re going to explore the wonderful world of breathing treatments (cue confetti). It may sound intimidating at first but don’t worry, I’ll be here to guide you through every step of the way.

What is a Breathing Treatment?

Before we dive into this tutorial extravaganza (I love that word) let’s take a moment to understand what exactly is a breathing treatment? A breathing treatment (or nebulizer therapy) delivers medication directly into one’s lungs via an inhalation device such as an inhaler or nebulizer.

What Causes Respiratory Issues?

Now that we have understood what breathing treatment means, it’s time for me to flex my ample knowledge by informing you about why somebody might need a breathing treatment in the first place (impressive right?)

Various illnesses like asthma (ughh), COPD (cough cough) allergies (achoo!), pneumonia and bronchitis can cause difficulty in taking deep breaths which makes getting enough oxygen quite challenging. This then becomes life-threatening if not treated promptly.

So without further ado, let us start with administering our very own Amazing Awesome Asthma Attack Antidote (AA4 patent pending).

Equipment Needed:

It’s important always to gather all equipment before starting any procedure -except when being chased by wasps- please follow along.
1. Nebulizer kit (consisting of nebulizer cup/ mask)
2. Compressor
3. Medicine vial
4. Sterile saline solution
5. Tissues
6. Pulse oximeter(fancy)

Preparing Your Equipment:

Preparation is key -such as mental preparation for your inevitable shift into superhero status- let us dive in.
1. Plug the compressor into an electrical socket and make sure that it’s turned on
2. Wash your hands properly with soap and warm water( or sanitizer if you’re boring)
3. Open up the medicine vial by twisting off the lid, then place it aside (Or juggle it while singing “Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down”)-A little bit of clownery never hurts!
4. Connect one end of the tubing to the nebulizer cup/mask and connect another end to a port on top of your machine (Extra point: DIYers can add glitter disco balls on their machines)
5. Press open saline solution flask, pour 3mL (the usual amount per session) On average once every month but follow prescription guidelines.

Dispensing Medicine:

Now we’ve reached my favourite part; dispensing medication!
Note: Please shake medicine vials before use – pretend they’re maracas!

Adding Medication

1.Put prescribed inhalant (chicken soup is not acceptable) medication into a clean measuring glass or use equivalent volume from multi-dose container.

2.Carefully squeeze contents until all Liquid goes to bottom

3.Then Twist Tip off so liquid drains right out
4.Pour prescribed dose in through neb entry

Wow – now you are like A Chemist -minus being hot looking huh?

Assembling The Machine:

Place assembled & connected mask onto face creating snug seal.
Turn machine ON, deep breaths are now recommended (Perhaps start practicing breathing fire for next week’s act?)

Administer Your Doses:

If using mouthpiece be careful inserting inside mouth before inhaling deeply enough times to finish cycle beginning with cough production once treatment has finished check pulse oxygen levels ensuring readings reach clinician-specified thresholds!

Don’t forget to reward yourself with a giggle or two (or three) after completing the cycle!

Conclusion:

Now that you are a fully-fledged breathing treatment administrator; don’t be afraid to help others breathe easier. Remember, this was only the basics of administering breathing treatments.

Thanks for reading! I’ll leave you with this joke: Why did the nurse always carry a red pen?- So she could draw blood! Laughter fading into distance
