How parenting affects development?

Parental guidance or lack of is one of the most critical factors that determine a child’s development. And as much as we try to bury our heads in the sand, research shows that indeed it plays a significant role, no matter how hard we wish it were not true. From day one when your tiny human emerges from your hoo-haa or through what I like to call -C-section express; they start absorbing every word you utter and every action you take. Therefore if you think aspiring to become a parent is as easy as streaming “How To Be A Parent” on Netflix; then Sweetheart, welcome back to reality where unicorns are caged pets.

Nurture vs Nature: The Wave That Rocks The Boat

It has been an age-old debate on whether genes affect children’s behavior more than parenting choices do, popularly known as nurture versus nature. Researchers have found out that both factors influence child development greatly- but since this section talks about parents’ impact let us focus on them for now.

Positive Parental Behaviour

Positive parental interaction affecting children’s social-emotional learning can be summed up into three main pillars:

1) Emotional Support

This involves creating an environment filled with adequate love warmth and praise towards their efforts regardless of the outcome while empathizing with them emotionally at all times.

2) Limitations Setting Boundaries And Guides

A strict yet flexible routine helps build cognitive brain circuits within these developing humans by setting boundaries based on reasoning yet nurturing independence without fear until they earn it regularly.

3) Clear Communication

Expressive communication between parents and their offspring reduces emotional vulnerability hence reducing emotional distress caused due t misunderstanding each other bringing them closer untangling issues interfering thus creating healthy relationships whereby better problem-solving skills come naturally. Cool ain’t It?

Negative Influence:

  • Quality Of Attachment-
Attachment refers to the connection between parents/caregivers and their children. When a child is emotionally neglected, left on alone for long periods or exposed to harsh parenting styles such as constant criticism, punishments without an explanation it affects their capacity to develop proper connections with other people.
  • Socialization-
when children are socialized inadequately; they tend to be more aggressive, have difficulties making friends hence affecting any future relationships.

ADHD: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Ok so lemme tell you a story about little Sammy sobbing sobs. A promising young fella who couldn’t focus in school even when he tried sniff sniff, his grades were slipping fast. Therefore unbeknownst at the time yet trying everything possible from creating detailed charts not working hardly studying some knew fate knocked on our door when I was washing dishes one day (that’s where all great stories come from) concluded really soon that my boy had inherited Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). So how is this related to Parenting?

Over-Protection And Helicopter Parenting

Parents may act out by overprotecting their offspring from every little bump in life causing them less exposure towards anything damaging therefore raising vulnerable members of society tied down by fear of failure rather than living life learning various ways that could lead them into success.

Minimal Supervision-Lack Of Rules & Discipline

On the flip side worse consequences still occur concerning lack of supervision where kids can easily get access to drugs because of minimal parental vigilance allowing insufficient sleep schedules coupled with more screen time resulting in fuelling up a continuously distracted state which has been associated with attention problems immensely.

Child Obesity&Body Image-Because Fat-Snowflakes aren’t cute:

Not saying chubby babies don’t look “oochie-coochie”; However, Imagine your toddler having bigger thighs than your waistline God Forbid

A healthy Diet And Exercise

Ensuring a balanced diet and implementing movements plays a vital role in maintaining healthy weights which asides from numerous health benefits boosts confidence, self-esteem hence creating body-positive individuals.

Praise Overlooks Body Shame:

Most of today’s lifestyle guides tend to focus on every little detail about body image causing some shame in the process. Parents who continually praise their children based on appearances like telling them they are overweight or have chubby cheeks contribute to fat-shaming that sticks with these humans for life.

Conclusion:

Theres no one uniform approach towards raising kids- however investing time into being there both emotionally and physically while providing not only basic but also extra support coupled with clear communication assists greatly towards nurturing happy successful human beings free from attachment issues aggressive behaviors and obesity due to lack of Self-Esteem whether nature or nurture dictates this – well after reading this article honey you get my drift.
