How painful is getting tonsils removed?

Are you considering getting your tonsils removed? Are you wondering how much pain to expect after the surgery? Well, look no further, because this article is here to give you an idea of what kind of pain and discomfort you might experience.

Getting your tonsils out is not a walk in the park. It’s more like a stumble through a field of thorns while being chased by bees. But don’t worry, with proper preparation and care, you can make it through without too much agony.

What are Tonsils?

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty details of getting them removed, let’s first understand what tonsils actually are.

Tonsils are soft tissue masses located at the back of your throat near your tongue. They play an important role in fighting off infections by trapping bacteria and viruses that enter through your mouth or nose. However, sometimes they can become infected themselves leading to symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing.

In some cases when the recurrent infections do not respond well to antibiotics, surgical removal becomes necessary.

Preparing for Surgery

Just like with any surgery – preparedness is key! Here’s what you need to know:

Meet Your Doctor

The first step should be booking yourself an appointment with a qualified doctor who will examine you before recommending whether or not surgery is necessary in your case.

Pro-Tip: Not all doctors have our best interest so make sure to check their credibility online before consulting them!

Fasting

On operation day (not quite Doomsday yet), avoid eating solid food for around eight hours before arriving at the hospital-liquids however may still keep that engine running-but consult earlier on this matter with Dr.Francis under whom I did my operation six years ago- just don’t blame me if things go south please!

Have a Chat with your Anesthetist

Anesthesia is nothing to mess around with. Talk in detail about the sedation plan and explain any preexisting conditions you might have because of which, you’re unsure what category will suit you best.

Note: Be as thorough as Skeletor was when he planned his revenge on He-Man!

Stock Up for After Surgery

Make sure to stock up on soft, nutritious foods like soups, mashed potatoes and smoothies that will be easy to eat after the surgery while still providing necessary nutrients.

It’s important to remember that afterwards, solid foods are more strenuous on the throat due during healing- so chew croutons whilst possible people.

The Process Of Getting Your Tonsils Removed

Finally doomsday arrives!
Before its showtime, the doctor/nurse may inject an IV drip into either hand before wheeling you off down much narrower hallways than one would have anticipated.

You’ll then find yourself minus tonsils afterwards… maybe!

Here’s how it works:

Pre-Surgery

After registering in at hospital reception, all personal belonging including jewelry has got to go- except underwear/tops could still count.
Patients put on their finest jumpsuits-only kidding- but make sure there’s something loose and comfortable.
Certain paperwork will also be filled out by wardens (nurses) asking your ID,and consent forms signed-don’t tick every single box out of principle or naivety yet take time deliberating each point.
A nurse verifies that fasting guidelines were followed beforehand before leading us into ‘the operation room’ ordinarily resembling a favorite ‘90s sci-fi movie set- though without plastic bulbs blinking deities know what message!
There, you meet some pleasant members of the surgical team: friendly vets readying themselves for open heart surgeries-a slight exaggeration nonetheless donning heavy white gowns,masks/gloves,busy machines and sharp surgical instruments, drugs to be administered for sedation, right lighting setup- careful not to fall asleep hiding in corners or disrupting the team’s morale!

The Actual Removal

Time for some random facial hair jokes!
Next thing you know,it’s all lights out as surgeon comes back wielding his blade(s). You won’t feel anything, except deep down, you wish Tony Stark was there replacing the surgical tools with nanobots.

Once it looks like a snack has been removed from the mouth area (sorry couldn’t resist),you will be wheeled back into recovery  where nurses keep checking blood pressure/pulse regularly.
And of course, the inviolable rule- no solid foods yet:
The after effects are both predictable /unpredictable– but let’s delve more on them below.

Post-Surgery Pain

Just like how we groove when listening to “Scatman”-screaming -aaah-battabing,a-pa-papa pow-how painful it might get is subjective-in terms of your pain tolerance levels/or depth of affection towards picnics(with its abundance food).
However-some degree of soreness/sharpnessthroats may last upwards two weeks-more brutal cases up to three-five weeksin extreme instances so make sure to recover accordingly.

Here are some common symptoms:

Sore Throat

The most obvious symptom will be a sore throat – which can range anywhere from mild discomfort to intense burning sensations every moment; equivalent feeling that one would have experiencing fifteen straight hours watching an Adam Sandler movie marathon-(Again subjectivity plays an important role)

Pro-tip: Make use of lozenges/medication advised by doctor who operated on you throughout healing process.

Swelling & Difficulty Eating/Swallowing

This is another widely known post-operation issue. There’ll be significant swelling around your throat which can make it difficult to eat or swallow- let alone finish a hotdog eating contest!

Ear Pain

As per Jeff Tucker(ENT doctor), ear ache soon after surgery is due to referred pain from those newly operated upon tonsillar-bed-nerves being largely intermingled. In other words,if Emma’s heart got broken by Austin,we all know how us friends /relatives will chip in with free advises-comments: So the cause/manner of your distress might be different but we’ve just painted you a Picasso level picture of what’s happening/following within.

Scabs & Bleeding

Finally (on the positive note)-scabs that occur once bleeding ceases help in speeding up recovery but expect brief painful periods…(.I did not clean out my nose properly for at least a week because I was scared.)

Disclaimer: Please follow post-opinstructions on when and how thoroughly to do this crucial cleaning process lest something bad happens.(like mistakenly applying body buttercream rather than saline solution -awkward!)

Recovery

Recovery time following surgery widely differs.
While some recover quickly bed rest/deeper sleeps,a few individuals-that Doctor Frankenstein won’t like- may find themselves struggling with common colds right after ward(luck of draw).

However,a light at end tunnel? Another symptom-signalling that recent operation is behind us yet-you losing weight from gorging down substantial amounts liquids despite warnings by doctors (Jokes apart-a legit issue) .

Regardless, understandably, this can prove frustrating as patients see other people moving around/doing activities they’d normally be doing.

Patience is key here! Whilst healing-chase new hobbies such as browsing memes/re-watching The Office episodes-the ‘Dundee Awards’ simply delivers every time!
Most importantly though-don’t rush yourself into over-exertion-sore throats spang back into life quite fast.it just requires ample rest, reserved diet plans-helps not to go in cold turkey/cranberry sauce-once healed you can reward yourself with chunky bars of chocolate;in form of small pieces.(Even experts agree-chocolate purely contains healing properties!)

Conclusion

Getting your tonsils removed isn’t a pleasant experience. It’s going to be painful and uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t put your life on hold entirely.Again, some people recover faster than others so don’t feel dismayed if you’re taking longer.
Remember to follow all post-surgery instructions carefully, maintain healthy lifestyle changes,it may even bring new unexpected adventurous into our lives!
In the end- look forward not backward ,you’re already one step closer, you’ve got this!
