Sodium, the element from group 1 of the periodic table with atomic number 11- that’s Na for you chemists out there. Sodium is an essential component required by our bodies to maintain fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, but it’s also known to cause hypertension if consumed in excess. So how much sodium is hiding in your favorite foods? Let’s explore!

Fast Food

Fast food may come cheap and quick, but what does your body pay for it?

Burgers

  • Flame-grilled chicken burger – 720 milligrams
  • Veggie burger (don’t worry we won’t judge) – 810 milligrams

Fried Food

Fried anything may be delicious, but at a cost.

  • French Fries – 350-650 milligrams per serving!
  • Fried chicken sandwich (960 mg) or better yet get grilled ones containing only about half the amount (490 mg).
