How much is a nebulizer?

Have you ever had a bad cough or trouble breathing? If so, you know how important it is to have the proper equipment at home to treat these ailments. One such piece of equipment is the nebulizer.

But wait…what even is a nebulizer? And more importantly, how much does one cost??

Well my friend, let me tell you all about it!

What’s a Nebulizer Again?

A nebulizer is an electronic device used to help those with respiratory issues inhale medicine into their lungs. It works by turning liquid medication into a fine mist that can be easily breathed in through a mask or mouthpiece.

Basically, if your asthma acts up or you’ve got bronchitis and need some meds delivered right where they’re needed…a nebulizer’s got your back!

Now that we’re all on the same page (and hopefully not still struggling with getting air!), let’s dive right in…

So How Much Does This Thing Cost??

The answer: well…it kinda depends. Shocking, I know! But hear me out…

Type of Nebulizers

First off, there are different types of nebulizers available for purchase:

  • Compressor
  • Ultrasonic
  • Mesh

Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages (which we’ll get to later), but they also come with varying price tags.

According to our research, here are roughly how much each type costs:

Type Average Price
Compressor $30 – $60
Ultrasonic $50 – $80
Mesh $100 – $250

As you can see, there’s quite the range! Now before freaking out about shelling out that kind of dough (especially for us broke college students!!), let’s look at some factors that can impact the price…

Brand

Like with most things in life, some brands are just more expensive than others. And nebulizers are no exception!

Here are a few different popular brands and how much they tend to cost:

  • Philips Respironics: $50 – 150
  • Omron Healthcare: $30 – $180
  • DeVilbiss Healthcare: $35 – $1000+ (yikes!)

So not only does the type of nebulizer you choose affect the price, but so does what brand it’s from!

Insurance Coverage

Another factor that might impact how much money you end up shelling out is…drumroll please…INSURANCE.

Some insurance providers will cover all or a portion of your nebulizer purchase if deemed medically necessary. Be sure to check with your provider before making any big moves!

And lastly…

Accessories & Extras

Just like when buying a car or ahem an iPhone, there’s often extra bells and whistles that come along with purchasing a nebulizer. Some common accessories include carrying cases or additional masks/mouthpieces.

These items can add on extra costs to the whole shebang, so just be aware when deciding whether or not to splurge for those optional extras!

What About Maintenance Costs?

Ah yes…the OTHER financially draining aspect of owning anything remotely medical-related: maintenance costs.

Thankfully, maintaining your trusty nebulizer shouldn’t break the bank too badly. Here are some potential expenses associated with keeping your device in tip-top shape:

  • Cleaning solutions (~$7-$15/bottle)
  • Replacement filters/cartridges (~$5-$10)
  • New mouthpiece/mask sleeves (~$3 per sleeve)

Depending on usage frequency and other factors (i.e., do you live somewhere particularly dusty??), these added expenses should only pop up a few times a year.

Tips for Saving $$

Alright so now that we’ve scared you with all the potential $$$ involved in owning a nebulizer, here are some tips for cutting corners where possible:

  • Buy generic brands or lesser-known ones (but always do your research first!)
  • Look into what insurance coverage is available
  • Keep up with regular cleaning/maintenance to reduce likelihood of needing more expensive repairs

Overall…it’s tough to give an exact number on how much you’ll end up paying for your own personal nebby. But if you do some homework beforehand and weigh out all your options, having one could prove invaluable when it comes to keeping your respiratory system in check!

(Disclaimer: Hey uh, just wanted to throw out there that obviously these prices can fluctuate quite a bit depending on store/location/etc., so make sure to look around before committing! Don’t want y’all getting mad at me cause I gave misinformation or something.)
