How many types of birth control are there?

So, you’re in the market for a birth control method that suits your needs- whether it be a long-term solution, short term solution or even something unconventional yet effective. Fear not! The world of contraception is vast and plentiful with tons of options to choose from. It can be overwhelming just looking at them all… but don’t fret, we’ve got your back. Here are some popular types of birth control methods to help you decide which one(s) work best for you.

Hormonal Contraceptives

Hormones, huh? Some love ’em; some hate ’em. These contraceptives usually consist of estrogen and/or progestin (synthetic progesterone), two hormones that regulate ovulation and thicken cervical mucus as well as thinning the uterine lining.

Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill

Ah yes, the pill; our trusty little friend! This tablet contains both estrogen and progestin hormones in varying amounts depending on type/brand which must be taken orally every day (make sure to take it within roughly the same hour each time). Perfect use provides high pregnancy prevention rates but wait, there’s a little asterisk because let’s face it: we all get sidetracked! With typical use (raises hand guilty!), this number drops slightly due to missing pills or taking them late resulting in contraceptive failure.

Progestin-Only Pill

Ahoy sailor! Unlike its combo pill sibling mentioned above, there’s no room for her sister Estrogen here swabbing deck aboard this ship called “POP”. Think about mini-pills darting around firing progesterone head-on without any added protection via estrogen hormone component. POP stands for “Progestogen Only Pills”.

Patch

Fashionistas unite! Imagine an adhesive stick-on like plaster, this little adhesive patch releases estrogen and/or progestin hormones into your bloodstream once placed on the skin (think watch-bands again for best placement). It’s to be reapplied every week; with one freebie period week at the end of each menstrual cycle giving time to ‘bleed’. Be careful using when applying lotion or cream as it can reduce its stickiness during application.

Injectable

Just a shot in the arm…or hip. This similar hormone duo as mentioned earlier is simply injected directly (surprise, surprise) via syringe by a healthcare provider usually resulting in contraceptive protection that lasts 2-3 months depending on personal response to hormones administered. No pills needed here!

Vaginal Ring

Better yet, have an intimate experience with your vagine which houses possibly little-known devices called vaginal rings! Thin bendy type plastic typically loaded with both estrogen and progestin circulating around an inserted ring worn for about 21 days before being removed giving off happy no baby vibes…and then inserting another freshy after 7-day break bleeding ensues.

Barrier Methods

Ah yes …the ol’ sock over Mr.Willy trick is fun at parties but there are other proven methods you should know about!

Condom

We’ve all heard of these . One option many couples invest in due to their dual purpose benefit of preventing not only unwanted pregnancies but STIs too enough said LOL (LOL stands for Laugh Out Loud)

Intrauterine Devices

Short-form commonly known as IUDs amongst most clinic/doctor visits either copper-based or hormonal ones available

Copper IUD

Women could get more metal such as copper instead of Gold just like men love driving loud cars The non-hormonal birth control method made from durable T-shaped type plastic wrapped around a flexible layering containing some amount of actually Copper throughout. Once inserted through uterus opening, arms of T will slightly move out to fit womb’s shape ensuring not only a solid placement but beyond effective for several years in regulating pregnancy prevention.

Hormonal IUD

Think copper version, but with added synthetic hormones such as progesterone. Similar quick installation process yet lasts from 3-5 years depending on what your doctor recommends based on medical history and current lifestyle patterns creating almost total unlikelihood getting pregnant during use

Sterilisation

For those couples ready to turn down the possibility of any pregnancies (It takes two tango after all right)…this option may permanently seem like just that!

Female Sterilization

We can also call this ‘tubal ligation’ type surgical procedure involving blocking or sealing off any potential egg travel through fallopian tubes preventing fertilisation altogether whilst still allowing menstrual bleeding…and uterine functions normalcy!

Male Sterilization – Vasectomy

‘Doggie snip-snip’, brother seal-the-deal, whatever you want to call it. Another failed condom experience? worry not! With each ejaculation involving semen release mostly our little stellar soldiers meandering around sea-water exit route…via penis tip-hole known as urethra..BUT WAIT Your body reserves approximately a fourth volume space amongst different ducts/veins/tubes called vas deferens….so medical professionals seal them off securing no sperm exiting testicles ever again! Sounds fun?
