How many tums a day for calcium?

Are you feeling a little crunchy lately? Not in the good way like a fresh piece of celery, but more like your bones are struggling to keep up with your daily grind? If so, it may be time to consider adding some extra calcium to your diet. And what better way than with everyone’s favorite antacid: Tums!

Why Tums for Calcium?

Before we dive into how many Tums you should be popping on the reg, let’s talk about why this chalky remedy is even an option for boosting our bone health.

As we all know (or at least have been told again and again), calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. It also plays a role in muscle function and cardiovascular health. But here’s the thing: our bodies don’t produce calcium naturally. We have to get it through food or supplements.

Enter Tums. These delightful tablets happen to contain 500 milligrams of elemental calcium per serving (aka two tablets). That’s nothing to sneeze at! Plus, they’re readily available over-the-counter at most pharmacies.

But hold up, are there other sources of calcium besides Tums? Of course! Dairy products like milk and yogurt are chock full of the nutrient. Leafy greens like kale and spinach also offer decent amounts of calcium per serving (not mentioned because they aren’t as fun as rainbow colored pills).

So…how many exactly?

Okay okay okay, enough with the preamble! You just want a straight answer: how many Tummys should I eat each day??

Well friendo, that depends on several factors such as age, gender, weight etc- just kidding who cares about all that mumbo jumbo — let’s do some math anyway!

According to Healthline.com:

The recommended dose range of elemental [calcium] intake should be 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams daily for most adults.

But let’s say you’re not getting much calcium from other sources in your diet. In that case, you may need to bump up the dosage a bit.

Funny enough- Tums recommends taking no more than seven tablets in any 24-hour period! That amounts to just 3,500 milligrams of calcium per day- which is close or even above the upper limit of recommended daily intake (makes me wonder whether we should also consume multivitamins for extra exaggeration). But because Tums doesn’t currently specify how many tablets equate to those 500mg per serving this again brings us back at square one – do some math!

The Mathematical Breakdown

Fear not my number-phobic friends- it’s pretty simple:

Two Tums = one serving
One serving = 500 mg elemental calcium

Accordingly, four servings or eight tablets equals about the recommended daily amount of elemental calcium needed each day.

So if you want strong bones and teeth without guzzling gallons of milk like a baby cow or eating heaping bowls of spinach like Popeye on steroids– slurp down eight tummy-taming tables each day (in divided doses… don’t swallow them all at once). Bonus points if they’re flavored :).

Busting Some Myths with Science

Now before our common myth-loving audience assumes that taking too many Calcium supplements lead to kidney stones.. Let’s throw some science into the picture – according to a study performed by Karolinska Institutet:

“None had previously experienced kidney problems although almost all had at least two risk factors: age over sixty years, high blood pressure and diabetes. The results show that long-term use (>180 days) has an associated risk factor with excess gastrointestinal disturbances… but none found ultimately positive relation between exposure after diagnosis with ‘new onset cases’. However, a lower risk was observed for recurrent cases. So for those patients with high-risk factors or suffering from kidney disease should consult doctors before taking in extra doses (which they probably were never planning to do anyways :D)”.

Point being- be cautious of the amount you’re taking if you fall under these categories but otherwise-it’s as safe as any other supplement!

But wait.. are there any downsides to this approach?

Yes – just popping Tums indiscriminately will not only add up when it comes to calcium intake, but they also come loaded with sugar! One serving of Tums contains around 2g of sugar which is easy to overlook while we’re focusing on optimizing Calcium levels (not so subtle nudging at people who think losing weight and eating healthy can only happen using tummy-friendly items) Also keep in mind that because our digestive system absorbs little milligrams at once meaning it’s best not to take all eight servings together – spread them out throughout the day instead.

So whether you’re lactose intolerant or simply too cool for milk (or spinach), Tums may just be your new BFF when it comes to meeting your daily calcium needs. Just remember: moderation is key… even when it comes to colorful fruity-flavored supplements.

Too long didn’t read version:

Take four servings (eight tablets) divided throughout day period( total equals about 2000mg elemental Calcium)

P.s don’t eat everything sweet even if they seem healthy-and always consider consulting medical professionals if you have pre-existing health conditions 🙂
