How long can angina last?

Has your chest been feeling a little bit tight lately, maybe even tighter than your pants after quarantine snacking? If you are experiencing this type of discomfort or pain in your chest area and it seems to come and go frequently, then there’s a high probability that you’ve got angina.

Angina is often described as uncomfortable pressure or tightness behind the breastbone – but don’t worry, we won’t start discussing boobs in detail here! It usually happens when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood. And while most people with angina just need proper medication treatment such as nitroglycerin, many symptoms can last for minutes to hours. You may be wondering how long an episode of angina attacks will last? Well, it depends!

What Causes Angina?

Before diving into how long an episode lasts though, let’s talk about what causes anginal episodes in the first place. Chronic stable angina occurs when coronary arteries become narrowed due to a buildup of cholesterol (a.k.a. plaque). This impairs blood flow which leads to insufficient oxygen supply for heart muscles causing them pain during physical activity or emotional woes.

So basically every time your ex texts ‘we need to talk,’ not only does he bring back terrible memories but also some serious chest pains!

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) on the other hand refers to conditions where there is actually reduced blood flow through certain parts of the heart because either:

  • A clot has developed within one or more artery that carry cardiac musle‘s blood
  • Rupture/plaque erosion exposes underlying tissues leading towards forming dysfunctional clots aka thrombosis

The resulting muffled cry from our poor suffering hearts manifests itself as unstable/unpredictable/variant/etc…. Depending on which instrument starts playing in response by mimicking panic signals through different organs.

Types Of Anginas

Let’s further classify the types of angina for clarity:

  • Stable Angina – Often in response to exercise activity, cold or even a heavy meal. Usually lasts just few minutes and goes away on its own. If it remains longer than that then you may have chronic stable angina which requires medical attention.
  • Unstable Angina – This is an acute medical condition that usually indicates progressive worsening of coronary artery disease leading towards unstable thrombosis when left untreated can cause cardiac infarction (heart attack). It’s known as most dangerous form and symptoms can last up to 30 minutes or more.
  • Variant/Angina Prinzmetal – Occurs due transient vasospasm occurring spontaneously especially during night time but not limited to any particular physical challenge except maybe anxiety if at all needed.

Now, let’s dive into how long these pesky episodes tend to stick around!

How Long Can Each Type Of Anginal Episode Last?

As we’ve already mentioned, the duration of your anginal attacks depends on two different factors: namely;

1) Type – Whether it’s stable/unstable/variant;

2) Individual characteristics–of both patients’ heart/cardiovascular system in regards with emotional/anxiety levels primarily among other things

Here’s what typical duration looks like for each type:

Stable Angina

The number one thing about Stable anginas? They’re necessarily reproducible because they’re often brought by physical activities such as walking or any sort of cardiovascular drills so their timing carries predictability traits likely spanning between various seconds and upwards several hours although this outer limit would be extremely rare.

Rememember also don’t mistake frequent “intermittent” short-lived chest pain lasting less than five minutes attributed to non-cardiac sources which are ~99% free from potentially fatal risks compared with true ischemic retrosternal discomforts in this category..

How long should I wait before going back to my work-out routine after experiencing angina episode?

It can be quite tricky to determine exactly when it is safe to resume previous levels of activity but a general rule and written guidelines recommend waiting for around 48-72 hours before proceeding. But as with any medical condition, always consult your physician!

Unstable Angina

Unstable angina can last anything from a few minutes up to half an hour in duration! As I mentioned earlier, this is the most dangerous form of angina because they happen suddenly without any provocation whatsoever and usually get worse over time if unstable.

So what’s the next step?? The best solution would be seek immediate medical attention i.e., calling EMS avoid driving yourself unless no other option left (experienced driver accompanying you). Do not dare postpone visitation hoping symptoms might disappear on its own or associating it with some harmless indigestion/flu-like cardiac symptoms such as heaviness like someone sitting atop chest, lightheadedness –> sweating etc. This could potentially lead to life-threatening complications in the future.

Variant/Angina Prinzmetal

Onset usually occur during night-time shocker! Unlike stable relationships which cause stress throughout working-day normalcy-looking stuff,your heart’s new crush enjoys appearing out of nowhere like romantic fantasies just when everything seems calming down right under our noses–but that thing lasts usually less than 10minutes so don’t worry too much about being awakened by hidden intense desire attached towards specific organ tissue while you sleep however in exceptional scenarios it may cross above ten minutes limit seeking professional advice becomes necessary.

Wrapping Up

Phew! That was quite a mouthful wasn’t it? Just remember that if you’re experiencing uncomfortable pressure or tightness behind your breastbone area whilst engaging physical efforts or even at rest — especially anyone who has increased risk factors like positive family history alongside diabetic conditions better schedule regular followups with your doctor. They’ll be able to give you the best advice on what steps to take next.

And with that, let’s all try and lead healthier lifestyles from now on-who cares if ex-bae is still hitting us up at midnight?!

Let’s prioritize our heart over sour personal experiences!

Stay safe everyone!
