How is povidone iodine made?

By now, we all know that povidone iodine (PVP-I) has been an essential disinfectant for decades. It’s been our go-to product for everything from cleaning cuts and wounds to sterilizing surfaces. And since it’s such a versatile chemical, people often wonder how this sword-swinging knight of the medical world is made.

The Basics

Before we delve into PVP-I production, let’s first understand what it actually is. Essentially, PVP-I is a complex compound derived from two different chemicals – polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and iodine. Right off the bat, you can tell these are not your typical dinner table names.

Now, in simple terms: PVP is essentially a water-absorbing polymer that binds with iodine molecules through covalent bonding. This combination forms an anti-microbial mixture that effectively targets viruses, bacteria, and fungi on contact.

So here comes the big question; how exactly do manufacturers make this superhero solution?

Obtaining Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)

First things first – let’s obtain some good old-fashioned PVP! The process includes four steps:

1- Monomer synthesis
2- Polymerization
3- Recovery
4- Purification

As exciting as those little steps might sound in isolation… well… they aren’t! But long story short; by combining acetylene with vinyl pyrrolidone monomers through catalyzed reaction results in polyvinylpyrrolidone or more commonly known as “povino”.

But fret not my dear readers because the real fun lies ahead! Well maybe “fun” isn’t exactly the perfect adjective but simply put next up would be….

Combining Polyvinylpyrrolidone & Iodine

This is the dawning hour where manufacturers take good care of their PVP and allow it to make a real connection with our dear friend iodine. This mostly consists of three primary processes:

1- Mixing
2- Dissolving
3- Drying

In the mixing stage, an inclined blender mixes high-quality PVP powder purchased from reputable suppliers with deionized water near 40 Celcius.

Once the mixture gets homogenized by blending for nearly two hours, Iodine enters this marriage as Potassium Iodide (KI) pellets into a polymerizing tank.

To prevent any potential mishaps, adding KI gradually to avoid overheating or localized concentration formation amidsous reaction is crucial.

The magic happens though when we heat that mixture between around 70°C while under constant mechanical agitation until iodine fully dissolves in the aqueous solution!

After all your little crystal friends dissolve fully, you need to reduce humidity under vacuum conditions while stirring during process drying at low temperature and pressure: goodbye H20!

Filtering The Mix

Hard parts are over yes but still there remains some necessary finalization treatments needed before packaging which includes filtering through evaporative crystallization!!

It’s quite simple; just use filters designed for organic chemical solutions because using paper filters would be….well… virtually meaningless. Polyester-polyamide membrane or hydrophobic filter, compatible hardware and effective dissolution methods…

Let’s fuse these membranes together now.. Voila! A successful unadulterated end product separating impurities containing salts such as potassium chloride(PCL), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) etc..

Finalizing The Product

Last but not least – packaging! Instead of packing those filters up again how about putting them in a bottle?! Sounds like an excellent idea right?

Before doing so though Povidone-Iodine needs to go through one last phase known as milling where it’s powdered in preparation for packing.

Now you’ve got different forms of the chemical to choose from: solutions, suspensions, swabs capsule or just plain old powder – the choice is yours!

As we know during times like these folks are scrambling to have secure access to such product fortified by experienced manufacturers so after all this process it’s good news that our new little baby comes out as sterile and safe for consumption.

We hope, dear readers, that we were able to demystify Povidone-Iodine production through this lighthearted deep dive! It turns out those complex sounding names I had mentioned initially did not impress our friend iodine at all! Yet when combined with some PVP between them and over some heat introduce KI pellets into their lives –miracles happen…

The world needs a disinfectant now more than ever & we’re lucky enough things slipped into place correctly- because going backwards might be hard considering how much fun it was learning about something once considered too technical!!

Let’s keep ourselves healthy and also respect everything surrounding us that keep us safe 🙂
