How does plan b affect your ovulation?

Picture this. It’s Saturday night, and you’re at a party having the time of your life. You’ve had a few drinks, and before you know it, things start getting steamy with that guy/girl across from you. Next morning, as the memories slowly come back to haunt you (thank God for Snapchat), you realize that maybe, just maybe there was something extra special than what happened between those sheets.

This is where Plan B comes in, ladies and gentlemen (and non-binary folks). Whether it’s the morning after pill or emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), these are an absolute lifesaver if used correctly – but how exactly do they work?

An “egg-citing” tale of ovulation

To understand the magic behind ECPs like Plan B, we need first to look at how ovulation works. Ovulation is when one of your ovaries releases an egg into your fallopian tube making its way towards…wait for it…the uterus! If during intercourse sperm manages to fertilize egg successfully around this time – BAM – pregnancy began.

So essentially ovulation has two friends help on its journey- Estrogen(Like Ross) who secretly helps mature an egg in preparation for release 14days earlier haha/ Plzzz get my ‘Friends’ reference!! And Luteinizing hormone(aka LH); Its Spike Spiegel(I’m a huge anime nerd!) levels rise midway through menstrual cycle triggering The Release!

But what happens when due to ‘reasons’ either natural or unclad-man-made disasters happen and inside-outside-fertilization was never meant to be?

Enter PlanB(elt)

PlanB uses progestin hormones (levonorgestrel) that preventfuture rosiness” by not allowing ovulation(Dunno about you, but I like my eggs scrambled). Because even if it has already happened- fertilization won’t occur.

Think of it this way; If sperm were school kids from an all boys/girls sch around handhi/ and the egg was a Cheerleader at cheerleading camp thingy(part of a teen movie plot), Plan B makes the cheerleaders leave before any “interaction” occurs.

Follicles 101: Stopping ovulation en-route

If you thought that was impressive (don’t worry, we know you did), wait until you hear how progestin works! Are you ready for some science-y (Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy’s Voice) terminology? Here are three words to repeat after me: Corpus Luteum and Follicle-Stimulating Hormones(aka FSH).

Progestin release by ECP such as PlanB stops follicles growing large enough to prepare your uterus lining for pregnancy by stopping corpus luteum formation. Remember when I said Esther helped mature the egg – well with her friend LH they also induce creation o f Corpus Lutuem inside Ovary which releases Progesterone hormone making Uterus wall ‘pregnancy-ready’. This is where no Corpus=no outer-sperm-area-making . So while achieving beach bods comparable Zayyan Malik ain’t easyyy cheatin’ prevented!

When things get complicated

But what happens when the ‘egg-citing journey’ is interrupted due to multiple reasons – hormones being imbalanced(stress or PCOS), cyst growth in ovaries etc.? For these people, immediate aid via pills causes changes in the cervical mucus, preventing sperm from reaching their ultimate target.

Plan B stimulates so much progesterone that cervical mucus buildup creates barricades preventing group swimming! Its like stopping a mixtape on repeating causing perma-music-stutter.

Timing is key

Remember, ECPs are only effective when taken within a 72-hour window after unprotected sex or failed contraception. The earlier you take these pills, the higher chances the testosterone reduced(prime time for progestin) quicker its action gets to work killing any chance of pregnancy!.

Side effects that make you go “ugh”:

Unfortunately, with all great power comes side-effects/ Unimaginable sacrifices happen like ‘alternate universes’ in sci-fi movies!

  • Nausea (aaahh!), headache(arrrggh!) and spotting(umm okay)

Jokes aside our body reactions vary some may feel no symptoms others experience feeling like weak jelly fish.

For those with pre-existing hormonal imbalances such as thyroid issues PCOS etc., sometimes Plan B can cause major hormonal changes affecting menstrual cycles and could temporarily stir things up!

So while sliding around egg-shaped cakes might sound fun(don’t ask), any unnecessary pill popping should be avoided without consultation from healthcare professionals!

Birth Control vs Emergency Contraception: What’s your pick?

It’s essential to understand that ECPs such as PlanB aren’t birth control alternatives- but rather backup plans aimed at reducing the hassle faced where other contraceptions fail – which will notably help reduce abortions worldwide.
While it won’t stop an STD transmission, getting tested regularly is equally important!

As always y’all happy trails mean safe trails!(we <3 puns!)

Well there we have it – hope this helped you guys learn something new about how ECP affects ovulation – starring special friends Esther Ross(LH Spike Spiegel). Remember to always use protection coz rubber shoes wear better than sweaty socks(jk-I’m not good with analogies)!
