How do you know if you need a deep cleaning?
Do you ever feel like your teeth just aren’t as clean as they used to be? Maybe you’ve been brushing and flossing regularly, but something still doesn’t feel right. Well, fear not! You may just need a deep cleaning.
A deep cleaning is also known as scaling and root planing. It’s a procedure that removes plaque and tartar buildup from below the gum line (no, not the subway system) to prevent or treat gum disease. Here are some signs that might indicate it’s time for a deep cleaning.
Persistent Bad Breath
If your breath smells bad even after brushing and using mouthwash, it could be a sign of underlying dental issues such as periodontitis (gum disease) or cavities (not those kind of cavities). These problems can cause bacteria to multiply in your mouth causing bad breath even if you maintain excellent oral hygiene practices.
Gums That Bleed When Brushing
Gums should never bleed when brushing or flossing unless there is an underlying issue with your oral health. This commonly occurs due to gingivitis (which sounds like something Willy Wonka created), which causes inflammation of gums caused by bacterial overgrowth in the area between teeth and gums.
Painful Chewing
Pain while chewing food can result from tender gums due to gingivitis (possibly named after an Italian composer?). The pain often worsens over time leading to tooth damage if left unchecked.
Tooth Sensitivity
Teeth sensitivity could indicate many things including exposed roots, weak enamel on molars caused by grinding / clenching at night etc., damaged fillings that leave behind open spaces around them because old ones have fallen out before new restorations were put in place; crowns needing replacement [1]. However one common cause is receding gums caused by gum disease. Having a deep clean can help alleviate the problem.
Swollen Or Red Gums
Red or swollen gums are not healthy and they may be indicative of underlying issues such as gingivitis. A proper cleaning treatment is recommended when you have these symptoms to reduce inflammation and prevent possible tooth loss.
Other Signs That You Need a Deep Cleaning
-
Formation of pus between teeth : This is very common for people with gum disease which could use scaling and root planing regimens
-
Wobbly Teeth due to receding gums: Gum recession (when your gum line pulls away from the tooth) exposes more of the root, making teeth less stable.
-
Yellowish coloring of enamel: Plaque buildup on teeth builds up over time if left untreated leading to yellow stains that do not go away following conventional brushing techniques but require professional scaling.
As disappointing as it sounds, even though we brush our regular basis dentists still find plaque in some parts where our brushes just can’t reach; this might lead to various dental problems if ignored [2]. The best way forward would be getting professional care periodically like annual check-ups or bi-annual DEEP CLEANING (hint hint) appointments which we believe would cost much lesser compared to what’s in store without them!
If any of these signs seem familiar or you experience other issues/serious pain while chewing food, see your dentist immediately. Don’t procrastinate in seeking an appointment, it may worsen things causing additional damage down the road; delaying a trip will only make matters worse because once gum disease sets in – usually over years’ worth/schedule instead[3]- there’s no inversion possibility! So Go get that Deep Dental Scaling & Root planning done ASAP!.
Keep smiling 😊
