How do styes form?

Styes are annoying and unsightly. They form near the edge of your eyelid, causing redness, pain, and swelling. It’s important to know how they form so that you can prevent them from happening again. In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about styes.

Understanding What Causes a Stye

A stye is an infection caused by bacteria that live on our skin or in our tear glands (Ever thought that tiny bacterias somewhere might be responsible for bringing an unwanted guest near your precious eyes? Guess what – it’s true!). When these bacteria get into a hair follicle on your eyelid or in one of the small oil-producing glands around the lash line of your eye and multiply faster than rabbits’ breeding frequency — voila! A painful pimple-like lump forms called as stye (YAY).

The Symptoms of a Stye

The first sign of a stye is pain or tenderness in one spot on your eyelid followed by some sort of bump or pimple along with redness, itching which follows up with excessive wetness outpouring aggressively & uncontrollably outta nowhere from the affected area because its actually tears being squeezed out due to pressure applied (Anyone who has ever had one understands why it’s called “pain” leading ‘a-la most common way towards crying’).

Other symptoms may include:

  • Tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Swelling around infected area
  • Itching

(Who knew maintaining hygiene could save us such unwelcome company?)

Here are some other tips for preventing styes:

  • Don’t share eye makeup or eye drops as it’s always a lil’ suspicious to borrow other people’s kajal or eye-drops, and turn that subtleness into an eyesore.
  • Take off your makeup before going to bed: It might seem like an unimportant rule of thumb but trust me your puffy already-stressed eyes will thank you later.
  • Do not rub, poke, touch eyes unnecessarily throughout day after evey 5 minutes. (Yeah! Stop the unnecessary funda guys!).
  • Always keep separate towels and don’t share with anybody else in family cause who knows who has what sorta bacteria lurking around (Yeah nobody wants any unwanted guests at dinner table)!
