How do nosebleeds start?

Have you ever been mid-conversation or just going about your day when BAM! You feel a trickle of blood coming from your nostril? Nosebleeds can be annoying, embarrassing, and sometimes downright scary. But have no fear – we’re here to break down exactly how these pesky nosebleeds start.

Anatomy of the Nose

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty details, let’s take a quick refresher on the anatomy of the nose. The interior walls of your nasal cavity are lined with delicate blood vessels called capillaries. These capillaries are responsible for warming and humidifying the air that passes through your nose before it reaches your lungs.

Blood Vessels Galore!

You may be thinking “Seriously though, why do we need so many dang blood vessels in our noses?” Well my friend, blame evolution! The vast network of capillaries helps bring oxygenated blood to every corner of our nasal tissues while also helping protect us against harmful bacteria and viruses floating around in the air like tiny little ninjas (you didn’t see that comparison coming).

Trauma & Dryness

Now back to bloody business – trauma is one common cause for starting a spontaneous nosebleed (you know like when you were 8 years old and thought it would be fun to build ramps out of plywood…and then ride over them on your bike?) True story- don’t try this at home kids…or anywhere else for that matter

Another common cause for beginning those bloody drips is dryness (dry environments can take away moisture making said inner lining more susceptible). Yes folks- you read that correctly – lackluster humidity levels could lead you right down bleed lin Road.

Humidify Up!

So next time someone makes a smart comment about keeping things fresh outdoors by speckling salt on the roads, suggest that by adding a little water to humidify up a bit (then perhaps giggle thinking about their confused staring observance following those instructions).

High Blood Pressure

Another culprit behind nosebleeds is high blood pressure – let’s lay out some knowledge on this topic. Most blood vessels carry non-pressurized blood at steady levels in and throughout the body. However some individuals’ systems go into overtime/overdrive mode. This overworking tends to exert more pressure than normal onto other veins and capillaries (imagine mini wrestlers squeezing through your nasal abyss).

Lay off the Salt & Beer

Now whilst having a high-pressure mainline is great for getting things done (like removing snow from sidewalks) it may lead to uncomfortable bloody noses if they’re not controlled correctly! So folks take care of yo-selves when it comes to eating right, limiting sodium intake/(salt) along with moderating alcohol consumption (see no-one told you healthy living activities could be so darn easy).

Medications Wreaking Havoc

We all know about medicine cabinet spills (that time Uncle Frank was trying to multitask whilst opening his prescription bottles hit critical mass). But real talk here guys – certain meds can mess around within your internal system and cause recurring nosebleeds as an unfortunate side effect! Aspirin being one rather commonly known self-involved cactus-like medication!

Talk with Your Doctor!

When considering medications our best advice would be: “Talk with your doctor before starting or changing any prescriptions.” Seriously though guys…best words of wisdom ever bestowed upon humankind IMHO!

Picking At Your Nose? Just Stop It.

There might be some people reading right now who don’t want anyone (especially me!) judging them for digging around inside their nostrils– but we need to have this chat anyway…picking at your nose increases the risk of tiny abrasions and scratches to the inside of your nose. These accidental cuts are essentially open doorways for germs and other irritants that may then cause a runny rose or even potentially jaded (read: bloody) edges on occasion.

HANDS OFF!

So let’s declare an official “Hands off policy”…seeing someone with their finger up one nostril is awkward enough- but now we can all hold our heads up in pride as stigma/discrimination/negative attention gets removed/revoked – proudly standing hand-nose neutral advocacy.

Recognizing, Treating & Preventing Nosebleeds

Now you know what causes these upsetting sanguineous streams, it’s important that we move into recognizing and treating them effectively! Here are some tips on how to manage those bloody drips:

  • Pinch your nose: As soon as you feel blood dripping from your nose, pinch it shut just beneath the bony bridge. Hold it there for about five minutes without letting go
  • Apply ice or a cold compress: Place an ice pack or cold compress across the bridge of your nose while pinching.
  • Lean forward slightly: Don’t lie down, because that will only cause blood to drain down through the back of the throat.(Exactly what everyone wants)
  • Schedule Appropriate Follow Ups: If you find yourself experiencing frequent nosebleeds make sure to schedule proper follow ups with primary physicians- who may refer further referrals/useful information/helpful guidance!!!

To prevent future bloody noses, consider using saline nasal sprays, lubricating ointments like petroleum jelly or running a humidifier throughout dry winter months—ultimately giving necessary added moisture/humidity lacking within indoor heating environments / Santa’s 🎅 flame 🔥 holding habitation contingencies 💯 %(commitment achieved!)
