Feline Friend or Foe: Pros and Cons of Having a Cat

Ah, cats. The independent felines that grace our homes with their presence – or leave them in shambles. On one hand, they’re cute and cuddly creatures that make adorable Instagram posts. But on the other hand, they can be quite destructive and finicky pets.

If you’re considering opening your home to a new furry friend, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons of having a cat before making your final decision.

Pros:

1. Low Maintenance

Cats are pretty self-sufficient animals compared to dogs or other high maintenance pets like birds or rabbits. They don’t require extensive grooming (unless you have a long-haired breed) and aren’t as demanding when it comes to attention from their owners.

Pro-tip: If you want an ultra low-maintenance pet, get yourself one of those furby things instead.

2. Good for Your Health

Studies have shown that owning a pet can lead to improved mental health by providing social support for their owners during times of stress or anxiety (although if looking after said pet is causing that same anxiety then we’ll call this point null). Cats in particular have been noted for reducing stroke risk through lowering blood pressure too – see? Proof gets us everywhere..

3. Great Companionship

Despite being less demanding than their canine counterparts, cats still provide great companionship for those who don’t necessarily want an animal up in their faces all the time (coughintrovertscough). They give love on THEIR terms which means there is always someone in ‘your space’ without being TOO much soand will happily spend hours curled up next to (or on top of) you whilst binge watching TV series (although at what cost..see below).

Cons:

4 . Scratching Issues…

One small scratch for a human, one unrepairable hole in your couch or curtains/good shirt/eyebrow piercing risk for you.

As cute as cats are, let’s face it – they’re notorious destroyers of furniture and carpeting if they don’t have a specific outlet to unleash their scratching urges on.

Pro-tip: Invest early in making sure your cat knows where the designated scratching post is (probably not grandma’s antique mahogany table shudder) before $1000s later that same object will have lasted longer than all of your past relationships.

5 . Litter Box Woes

There’s no denying it – having a litter box in the house isn’t precisely aromatherapy. When you think about it though…fledgling houses once had rats scuttling around in them; now we happily put poop trays under our own pets after merely just keeping OURSELVES alive previously..

Cleaning out the litter box can also end up being an unpleasant experience (especially when said cat has urinary /digestive issues..). Plus, their waste particles inevitably get swirled through air currents throughout our homes so essentially we are living IN THEIR BATHRROM even more than them (sounds lovely!)

6 . Hairballs Galore

If there’s one thing cat owners know too well (MOP EDITION!) – it’s dealing with hairballs which seem to appear at random intervals like plot twists but always without warning (#SoConsiderate).

Although regular grooming helps keep this issue under control (another pro tip) – short haired breeds release fluff ALL YEAR ROUND; long-haired ones adding some nice variety by shedding two entire winter-hedgehogs worth of fur every day Mr Tumnus!!!

Conclusion:

In conclusion my feline friend Waxes Philosophical, owning a cat can be both fulfilling and challenging: one minute they’re curled up in your lap purring away, the next minute they’re shredding your furniture to pieces.

But isn’t that what life is all about – taking risks and embracing the unknown? As long as you weigh up all of the pros and cons before bringing a kitty into your home (or three .. or six) then both you and your new furry friend can live happily ever after. MEOW-VELLOUS!
