Does plan b cause breast cancer?
Ah, the age-old question: does taking Plan B cause breast cancer? Well, my dear reader, it’s time to grab a drink and sit down for a good read because we’re about to break this issue down. Get ready for some truth bombs.
What is Plan B and How Does It Work?
Let’s start with the basics. For those who may not know or have been living under a rock, Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken up to 120 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (yes ladies, sometimes condoms break… sigh).
Plan B contains levonorgestrel which works by preventing ovulation or fertilization of egg cells. If ovulation has already occurred, it may prevent implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus. In other words- no pregnancy.
The Big Question
But now let’s talk about what you really came here for: does taking Plan B cause breast cancer?
First things first – NO! There is currently no scientific evidence that suggests that taking Plan B increases your chances of developing breast cancer.
The Science Behind It All
Here comes some science-y stuff so brace yourselves! According to studies done by the National Cancer Institute (cue dramatic music), there is no “significant increase” in breast cancer risk among women who use hormonal birth control methods like levonorgestrel-containing pills (aka plan b) when compared with women who never used them.
To put things into perspective – smoking cigarettes (oh wait I mean “lighting up death sticks) significantly increases your chance of lung cancer but using emergency contraception actually shows NO INDICATIONS OF CAUSING BREAST CANCER!
So breathe easy folks – this means you can still take emergency birth control without having to worry about increasing your risk of breast cancer. You would have more to worry about eating junk food every day than taking Plan B.
The Catch 22
Ok, let’s face it. EVERYTHING HAS ITS RISKS therefore, there is some risk associated with emergency contraception use. However, in this instance – breast cancer is not one of them. Instead, you may experience (drum roll please)…
- Nausea
- Headache
- Fatigue
The usual symptoms that come from taking any form of birth control pills! While these effects are mild and typically short-lived (so don’t freak out), they can still impact your everyday life.
So Should You Take It?
That’s entirely up to you! But just remember that “failing to plan is planning to fail.” If you’re not ready for a child or want more time before starting a family (ahem ahem definitely me right now), having a backup contraception method like Plan B handy can protect your future.
And if we haven’t stressed it enough already – using the pill DOES NOT cause breast cancer!
So next time someone tells you otherwise or tries to put their false nonsense into conversation.. remember what we said here today folks…..
