Does hepatitis a affect the liver?

Are you worried that you may have caught hepatitis A and it may affect your liver? Fear not, my knowledgeable friend, because we are about to take a deep dive into what exactly hepatitis A is and whether or not it can cause some serious damage.

What is Hepatitis A?

First thing’s first, let’s get familiar with hepatitis A. This pesky disease is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) which primarily spreads through the consumption of contaminated food or water. It can also be contracted through close contact with an infected individual.

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine and yellowing of the skin and eyes… yep sounds like a super fun time!

How does HAV Cause Damage to Your Body?

Now here comes the important part: does this nasty bugger actually harm your liver? And if so how?!

Well my dear reader, buckle up for some big words! After being consumed/inhaled/absorbed/transmitted via unicorns (just kidding about that last one) hepatitis A makes its way to your small intestine where it starts reproducing itself in cells known as hepatocytes (these are fancy cells found in your liver).

It then infects more hepatocytes until BOOM there’s a full-scale viral party going on right inside your body. At this point immune cells from all corners of town muster up their troops -get ready for another scientific term coming- T lymphocytes rush to kick ass against infected hepatocytes while sending out feel good cytokines that spread morale throughout other immune comrades (sounds like something out of Game Of Thrones doesn’t it!).

And yes these battles inevitably lead to damage within hepatic tissue; resulting in significant inflammation within our bodies.

So long story short – YES! Hepatitis A can create problems with our livers due to inflammation caused by the fight with infected hepatocytes.

But Can This Inflammation Cause Permanent Damage to My Liver?

Thanks for asking my dear reader, so far we’ve just covered that hepatitis A does damage our liver tissue and causes inflammation – but what exactly happens after the battle ends (cue dramatic music)?

Well let’s take a look at your immune system for a moment, while it helps protect against harmful viruses or bacteria get ready another scientific word: ‘cytotoxic’. These type of immune cells are known as natural killer T-cells and they’re freaking brutal… FYI you don’t want to mess with them.

When hepatitis-infected hepatocytes come into contact (punch up) other cytotoxic cells rush in to assist leading to significant inflammatory reactions within liver cell structure. Now here comes the important thing- due to continuous fighting between hepatitis A virus (HAV) + our badass army of natural killer T-cells; this persistent destruction leads loss/variations in essential hepatic-cell function overtime.

So again YES! Hepatitis A can lead us down darker pathways towards more permanent liver-damage if not treated accordingly during its acute phase (referenced by self-limited time-frame of disease).

Is There Anything I Can Do To Prevent Getting HAV?

Here it is ladies & gents, preventative measures that’ll hopefully help steer clear of potential outbreaks!

Vaccines:

To start off there vaccines available (HUGE relief sigh) serving as an awesome protective barrier against possible infection instead any cellular battles reigning havoc on our bodily immunity functions! Get vaccinated folks!

Proper Handwashing:

Wash hands remove grime/germs lurking around reducing transmission risk via food/water/important human interaction wink wink

Ensuring Food Safety:

Thoroughly cooking foods prior ingestion obliterates remaining viral invaders providing less chance become host colony for HAV.

Travellers Be Cautious:

Unfortunate outbreaks occur globally so educate your selves (prior to travelling) about exposure risks related areas visited; vaccination availability in foreign lands is an educational assumption.

Bada-Bing-Bada-BOOM That’s Hepatitis A and its Effects on Your Liver!

So there you have it in a nutshell, hepatitis A… just another equally unpleasant form of liver disease (insert moment of silence).

We looked at how this blood-curdling pathogen can harm our immune system & why we need take preventative measures. So next time you hear someone coughing /sneezing nearby or sitting close by someone spewing their germs make sure some irrational irritation/kicking them outta’ the room thought comes into mind…. Just Kidding – don’t do that!

Just remember always 😷, wash those hands 🤲 , cook foods properly👩‍🍳, get vaccinated💉 and pray for world peace!
