Does having diarrhea clean out your colon?

Ah, the age-old question that has plagued humanity since the dawn of time. Okay, maybe not that long, but it’s definitely something we all wonder about from time to time. So let’s get straight to the point: does having diarrhea actually clean out your colon? The answer might surprise you.

What is diarrhea?

Before we can dive into our burning question, let’s first take a look at what exactly diarrhea is. Diarrhea is defined as loose or watery bowel movements that occur more frequently than usual. It can be caused by a variety of factors including viruses, bacteria, spicy food, and stress (not my boss again). When our bodies are trying to rid themselves of these irritants quickly, poop evacuation mode kicks in and boom! We’ve got frequent trips to the bathroom.

What happens during diarrhea

Without getting too graphic (we’ll leave that for later), when you have diarrhea, there’s less water absorbed in your intestines, leading to those lovely liquidy bowel movements. This rapid expulsion of waste can make us feel temporarily relieved – ahem…and lighter – but it doesn’t necessarily mean our colons have been “cleaned out” completely.

Colon cleansing: A closer look

Have you ever heard of a colon cleanse? Some people swear by them as a way to detox their body and improve their overall health. These cleanses typically involve fasting followed by drinking either an herbal tea mixture or some kind of solution designed specifically for this purpose (would rather drink my coffee 10/10).

Do they work?

The jury is still out on whether or not colon cleanses are actually effective (I mean have some faith) , but one thing is for sure: they’re not an enjoyable experience. So if you’re looking for a quick fix, there may be other options available to you.

Can diarrhea be beneficial?

So, back to our original question: Does having diarrhea clean out your colon? The short answer is no, not really. However, there are some potential benefits to having the occasional bout of loose stools.

Boosting gut health

When we have a healthy balance of bacteria in our guts, they’re better able to digest food, absorb nutrients and maintain overall gut health. Diarrhea can help remove harmful bacteria from our intestines and make way for good bacteria to thrive (not sure how I feel about the phrase “good bacteria” but okay).

Flushing out toxins

Our bodies rely on a complex system of organs and biological processes that work together to eliminate toxins (way cooler than Tony Stark’s suit). When we have diarrhea, those same toxins can be flushed out more quickly than usual – which means less time for them to cause damage or build-up over time.

In short, while having an upset stomach and explosive bowel movements may not necessarily leave us feeling refreshed or rejuvenated, they do serve a purpose.
Diarrhea isn’t exactly an ideal method for cleansing your colon or improving your overall health, so if you’re looking for ways to achieve either of these goals without sacrificing comfort (because let’s face it…nobody enjoys spending extended periods of time in the bathroom), there are likely better options available.
Here’s hoping this little jaunt through digestive land has been informative as well as entertaining – because when it comes down to it,you should always get what you came for: laughs!
